Southport Heritage Running Day returns this weekend with vintage buses and charity fundraising
1 hour ago
A much-loved day of nostalgia is rolling back into town this weekend as Southport Heritage Running Day returns on Sunday 29 March.
Organised by the North West Vehicle Restoration Trust, the event will see a fleet of beautifully restored vintage buses take over Southport, all while raising money for Elsie’s Story.
Running from 10am to 5pm, visitors can hop on and off classic buses from the Promenade near Silcock’s Funland, with routes heading out to places including Ainsdale, Crossens and the Botanic Gardens in Churchtown.
It’s completely free to ride, with donations encouraged throughout the day in support of Elsie’s Story.

There’s plenty to explore too, with different routes offering unique experiences. Route 30 will connect to Victoria Park, where visitors can also enjoy miniature steam train rides at the Southport Model Engineering Club, while Route 27 links up with services at Southport train station via Merseyrail.
Alongside the bus rides, there’ll be a static display of vehicles at the Esplanade park and ride, plus stalls from organisations including the North West Air Ambulance and Merseyside Police’s Travelsafe team.
A £5 souvenir programme will also be available on the day, packed with route details and event info.
Last year’s event raised more than £3,000 for charity, and organisers are hoping to go even bigger this time around.
NWVRT Secretary James Rowlands said: “It’s going to be a fantastic day and a great way to bring people together. You can ride the buses all day, enjoy something a bit different and support an amazing local charity at the same time.”

With buses dating from the 1950s through to modern day, the event offers a rare chance to step back in time, whether you’re reliving memories or experiencing vintage travel for the very first time.
Families are being encouraged to head down, enjoy the atmosphere and be part of a special day celebrating transport history while supporting a great cause.
