Strawberry Field will bring its much-loved Summer Fete back to the famous red gates this July, celebrating the anniversary of the original Salvation Army children’s home which opened on the site back in 1936.

Taking place in Strawberry Field on Saturday 5 July 2025, the free event will offer a full day of live music, family fun, local makers and summer specials from the on-site Imagine More café. The celebration pays tribute to the original fetes once enjoyed by a young John Lennon and his Aunt Mimi in the 1940s and 50s.

Visitors can explore everything the site has to offer, from arts and crafts to community projects, while learning more about the ongoing work of The Salvation Army at Strawberry Field. That includes its Steps at Strawberry Field programmes, which support young adults with barriers to employment.

Recycles Merseyside, the Salvation Army’s bicycle repair and training project, will also be at the event, offering bike maintenance and advice on how to pick up a fully refurbished ride.

Throughout the day, there’ll be performances from Wall of Sound, SingMe Merseyside Choir, Northern Li9ht, There’s Moo, the Strawberry Field Ukulele band and the Steps to Music group — made up of young people involved in the charity’s programmes.

Visitors can also take a journey through the site’s history. For a small additional charge, the award-winning visitor exhibition and garden tour will be open all day, giving insight into the original children’s home and John Lennon’s early life and inspiration.

Sue Harvey, commercial manager at Strawberry Field, said:
“Strawberry Field has a long tradition of hosting summer fetes in the gardens. John Lennon and Aunt Mimi would often attend, so this feels like the perfect way to honour that legacy. It’s also close to the anniversary of the famous St Peter’s Church fete where John met Paul McCartney in 1957, so it’s a brilliant time to celebrate Woolton’s place in music history. We’re looking forward to a great day of family fun and community spirit.”

The Summer Fete runs from 10am to 4pm with free entry to the grounds.
