Student Guide: Football on Merseyside

By Jacob Routledge

For starters it’s not called Football, alright? Footy is its name now you live in Scouseland. Every footy fan would rather watch the game from the terraces rather than listen to Martin Tyler commentate.

If only you had a guide of all the local teams then ay…….well look no further. Our lad at the ground, Jacob brings you the definitive guide to the local teams.

Across Merseyside, the famous footballing Mecca of Europe, there are a plethora of games you can get down to see on most nights throughout the week. Alright, so it might not be top-flight standard. But non-league games are still a decent evening out and it’s a great way to see more of the city.

Liverpool F.C.

The Guide Liverpool Anfield

The mighty Reds, the awesome Anfield. England’s most successful club in terms of trophies. No surprise then a ticket is rare and expensive. BUT if you sign up in the Liverpool FC website with your snazzy new L postcode, you will be eligible for the local sale, a bunch of tickets for people in the area priced as low as 9 quid!

Be quick, as you can imagine these are in high demand and often sell out straight away! Anfield is dead easy to get to from the city centre, the 14 bus takes you to its doorstep. Also, the new match-day bus service goes from town to the stadium, more details available here.

Plus for all your LFC news, debate etc give the gang at @TheAnfieldWrap a follow – free podcasts, daily updates and more.

Everton F.C.

The Guide Liverpool

Everton FC

Liverpool’s blue half enjoy easier access to tickets. Not as many fans means not as much demand, have a look on the website for tickets and deals. Only a stones throw from Anfield, the 19/19a, 20, and 21 buses or a more expensive taxi from the city centre will get you to Goodison Park on time for kick off. Click here for fixtures and more info.

You can now buy your tickets for all EFC games online with us via Ticket Quarter. Click here for more info.

For regular news and updates on EFC follow the gang at Blue Kipper. More info here

The others teams are non-league, but that just means cheaper tickets and refreshments.

City of Liverpool F.C.

A non-league team with a stadium in Bootle. Only formed in 2015, City of Liverpool F.C are a good one to go and see to scratch the itch. Tickets to watch the Purples are only a FIVER, how good is that? Click here for tickets and fixture details.

Prescot Cables F.C.

My local team, Forza The Cables! The 10a or 10 bus services from Liverpool City Centre will drop you off round the corner from the ground. £7 a ticket and £3 a pint. They even have their own ultras, smoke bombs and everything!! Click here for info.

AFC Liverpool

AFC Liverpool - Football

The ‘Little Reds’ play five steps below the football league and are based in Crosby. The club was formed in 2008 by Liverpool FC fans to provide an alternative to those priced out of top flight football. The club is all about providing ‘Footy For A Fiver’ and is owned and run by the fans. Click here for fixture details

St Helens Town F.C.

Up in woolyback land, St Helens Town F.C at the moment are playing at Prescot Cables’ ground, Volair Park. Have a look at their website for more details. They are hoping to move up to St Helen’s in October, following the redevelopment of their ground. A Fiver in and a good atmosphere. More from St Helen’s FC Website here

Tranmere Rovers

Prenton Park - Tranmere

Probably the most famous club in the list, besides Liverpool and Everton. If you find yourself over the water in Birkenhead, get down and watch the Rovers. Ex football league team with a history going back to 1884! However, tickets prices are a bit steeper at £20 if you buy online, but the stadium is well worth a visit. Head to their website here to book tickets

Whichever team you decide to go and support, give their website a visit first and have a bev for us!
