Days Out
Ten reasons to visit West Kirby this Summer
6 months ago
Summer is here and itâs the half term holidays for many, so you might be planning a day out in and around the city region.
Here is our look at West Kirby, where you can wander the shops, mess about on the water, and even take a walk to a wildlife rich island.
History
West Kirby has enjoyed a long and fascinating history, with its name kirkjuby, or âchurch settlementâ, dating from the early 10th century when the village formed part of the important Viking enclave of North Wirral.
In the Bronze Age, Black Horse Hill is thought to have been used as a vantage point for spotting potential invaders.
As taking the sea air and enjoying the seaside water became more popular in the Victorian era, the reputation of West Kirby began to grow and when the railway reached the town in 1878, more visitors began to enjoy its charms.
In 1897 work started on a promenade, the marine lake opened two years later, Ashton Park followed in 1901 and the townâs popularity as a visitor destination for families from Liverpool and further afield was cemented.
Views
With its unique position on the Wirral peninsula, you can enjoy breath taking views across the River Dee to north Wales. On a clear day you can spot the Great Orme in Llandudno and even Anglesey.
Walk
When the tide allows, take a walk over to Hilbre Island. It should take you around an hour to make the walk. Dogs are allowed but please keep them on a lead.
If youâre lucky once you get there, you might even spot the islandâs grey seals, with the best chance to do so from the far side of the island.

A good pub
The West Kirby Tap has been serving real ales, craft beer, local gin and much more for a decade.
This dog friendly neighbourhood joint also serves great pizza and other nibbles. There are also regular live music events.
You can find The West Kirby Tap in Grange Road.
