From Liverpool’s drag scene to becoming a global icon, The Vivienne has left an indelible mark on the world of drag and became a trailblazer for LGBTQ+ artistry.

The Vivienne was not only an incredible talent, but also helped reshaped perceptions of drag artistry and brought recognition to the Liverpool’s LGBTQ+ creative community.

Born James Lee Williams, The Vivienne’s journey began in the heart of Liverpool.

As a regular performer at Superstar Boudoir on Stanley Street, the epicentre of Liverpool’s LGBTQ+ nightlife, and also GBAR on Eberle Street, The Vivienne quickly became known within the local drag circuit.

Her sharp wit, impeccable impersonations, live vocals, and jaw-dropping fashion elevated her from a local favourite to a rising star.

In 2015, The Vivienne was crowned the first-ever UK Ambassador for RuPaul’s Drag Race, a title that set the stage for her eventual global acclaim.

But it wasn’t just his talent that captured hearts – it was James’ authenticity, charm, and commitment to bringing joy and representation to the forefront of his art.

Making history on Drag Race UK

When Drag Race UK launched in 2019, The Vivienne eventually became its first ever winner, cementing her place in drag “herstory”.

Her portrayal of Donald Trump in the now-iconic Snatch Game proved her mastery of satire and comedy, while her runway looks showcased her flair for glamour and theatricality.

Winning the crown not only marked a pivotal moment in her career but also shone a spotlight on Liverpool as a hub for exceptional drag talent.

Her victory brought new attention to the art of drag and its ability to challenge societal norms.

Viv was invited back to compete on Ru Paul’s Drag Race All Stars season 7. An ‘all winners season’ where she competed against the best of the best.

For Liverpool, it was a source of immense pride to see one of their own championing such an art form on a global stage.

The Vivienne’s impact extended far beyond the Drag Race runway.

She became a trailblazer for LGBTQ+ representation, using her platform to advocate for equality and visibility for likes of Sahir House, Liverpool’s first ever LGBTQ+ Charity.

From her candid discussions about sobriety to her celebration of queer history, she proved that drag is more than just performance – it’s a powerful medium for storytelling and activism.

Her ventures included music releases, such as her single “Tonight,” and starring roles in shows like “The Vivienne Takes on Hollywood,” a show produced by the team behind Drag Race, this show was Viv’s reward for winning the show, and showcased her charisma and hilarious humour to a global audience.

As well as being a panellist on numerous TV shows like, Celebrity Juice and Blankety Blank,  The Vivienne became the first drag queen to become a contestant on ITV’s Dancing On Ice in 2023. Paired with American skater Colin Grafton, the duo performed to iconic songs such as  Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious and Don’t Cry for Me Argentina, eventually placing third in the competition.
