The Watering Can owners open sister site The Wheelbarrow – on the outskirts of Sefton Park

The Watering Can, located in Greenbank Park, has added to its portfolio signing a five-year lease in partnership with Greenbank Sports Academy to operate its food and beverage outlet.

The owners, Keith Perryman and Philip Starling, opened the award-winning Watering Can in April 2019 and despite the challenges of the pandemic have grown the bistro into a vibrant and successful venue that attracts visitors from the region and beyond as well as securing media attention from national and regional platforms.

The latest venture is a sister site and is aptly named The Wheelbarrow. The stunning new venue is on Greenbank Lane, a stone’s throw from the historic 235-acre Sefton Park. The total space, including an outside terrace  is 510 square metres,  which will comfortably seat 65 covers and could be maximised to 100 and up to 120 allowing for standing as well. The Wheelbarrow has been lovingly renovated to give it a warm and inviting feel with a beautiful outside south facing terrace area with decorative planting for alfresco dining. The owners have invested £100,000 transforming the previous college canteen into a lush, inviting and welcoming space.

Guests will be able to enjoy a full breakfast menu from 9am including everything from a ‘Full English’ (vegetarian and vegan options available), along with lighter breakfasts including Huevos Rancheros, Croque Madame Croissant, or a Bacon or Sausage Barm, to name a few. A child’s breakfast (for aged 10 and under) is also available. A small but attractive lunchtime menu will initially be available from 1pm and diners will be able to enjoy a selection of sandwiches, bigger plates and sides, such as The Wheelbarrow Posh Fish Sandwich, Fried chicken sandwich, Fish and Chips.

The owners are delighted that as part of the lease agreement they will, in partnership with Greenbank College, be offering work experience and traineeships to the Greenbank College students.

Owner Keith Perryman said:

“As someone who was raised in the area, I am delighted that as a business we are able to invest in and support our local community. My partner Phil and I are incredibly proud of the venues we have created and the attention to detail we have lovingly injected into both café bistro’s and we are also proud of the teams we employ and the many customers who support us.  We look forward to welcoming our guests to The Wheelbarrow and showcasing a venue we have transformed into a hidden gem which will be well worth a visit”.

The beautifully re-styled venue is now a vibrant rustic oasis in the heart of one of the city’s most popular suburbs, is fully accessible, dog friendly and will be serving take-away options running alongside the dine-in menu.  The Wheelbarrow will be open to the public with a full menu from Friday 10th June , but has been trading for teas, coffees, snacks and takeaways since Friday 3rd June.   The Wheelbarrow will open from 9am -10pm from Monday to Friday and from 9am-6pm on Saturday and Sunday.   The beautiful and creatively designed venue will also be available for private hire.
