The Whitechapel Centre has been awarded a grant by The National Lottery Heritage Fund to help mark 50 years of supporting people facing homelessness.

Today, The Whitechapel Centre is announcing a £30,700 grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to help explore how homelessness has changed over five decades, as well as sharing how support offered by the Liverpool based charity has transformed lives.

The project will highlight how social, economic and political situations affect individual circumstances and how homelessness services have adapted and changed over the decades. To help with this, the charity is gathering stories from people who have been involved with The Whitechapel Centre, either as a volunteer, staff member or those who have used the services.

The 50th project will develop a social history, collating stories and a timeline to be featured in an exhibition at the Open Eye Gallery in Liverpool and on the charity’s website. The exhibition will be curated by a cocreation team of members including people with a lived experience of homelessness.

David Carter, CEO of The Whitechapel Centre, said:

“We’re thrilled to have received this support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players we’ll be able to share the evolving issues in the last five decades, how we’ve supported those facing homelessness – and the many stories of transformed lives.”

Helen Featherstone, Director, England, North at The National Lottery Heritage Fund, said:

“The Whitechapel Centre has been doing important work for many years related to homelessness in Liverpool. We are delighted to be supporting the charity, thanks to money raised by National Lottery players, to explore and share the history of homelessness in the city, and how it has changed throughout the 50 years the charity has been in operation.”

The free exhibition will run at the Open Eye Gallery from 25 September to 19 October.
