The Woman in Black returns to Liverpool Playhouse
1 hour ago
One of the most iconic ghost stories ever staged is heading back to Liverpool, as The Woman in Black returns to the Liverpool Playhouse for a strictly limited run from Tuesday 24 to Saturday 28 February.
Based on Susan Hill’s chilling novel, the legendary production was last seen at the Playhouse during the Christmas season in 2023, where it proved a big hit with local audiences. Since its debut, the show has been experienced by more than seven million people across the UK and remains one of the most successful thrillers in theatre history.
The Woman in Black famously enjoyed a record-breaking 33-year run in London’s West End, clocking up more than 13,000 performances at the Fortune Theatre. Its return to Liverpool brings that same spine-tingling atmosphere back to the city centre stage.

This production stars John Mackay as Arthur Kipps, a lawyer haunted by a curse he believes has been cast upon his family. Mackay’s theatre credits include The Doctor at the Duke of York’s Theatre and performances at New York’s Park Avenue Armory, while TV audiences will recognise him from The Crown and Bridgerton. He is joined by Daniel Burke as The Actor, whose previous roles include the UK tour of The Girl on the Train and Troilus and Cressida for the Royal Shakespeare Company.
Stephen Mallatratt’s adaptation follows Kipps as he attempts to recount and rid himself of a terrifying experience involving the mysterious Woman in Black. With the help of a young actor, what begins as a simple retelling soon becomes something far more unsettling, as imagination and reality blur and the horror takes hold.

The production is directed by Robin Herford, with Antony Eden as Associate Director. Design comes from Michael Holt, with sound design by Sebastian Frost and lighting by Kevin Sleep, all combining to create the show’s trademark tension and creeping dread.
Speaking about the return, director Robin Herford said revisiting the production allows it to feel new again, thanks to each cast bringing fresh imagination and emotional depth to the roles, ensuring the story remains as powerful and frightening as ever.
The Woman in Black runs at the Liverpool Playhouse from Tuesday 24 to Saturday 28 February.
