The best food, drinks, parties and more this week in Liverpool.
There’s never any shortage of great things going on in Liverpool, whether that’s treating yourself to breakfast or a bottomless brunch, going to a gig or getting a bit of a culture fix.
Here’s The Guide’s pick of what to get on your to-do list this week …
Support the local community …
Food Aid Liverpool at The Florrie – this coming Saturday, April 1, get to The Florrie for its fundraising festival. There’s a full line-up of live music, with four indoor and outdoor stages, a pop-up market, food stalls and bars. Gates open at 1.30pm, the first bands are on from 2.30pm and funds and food donations will support community food spaces across the city.
For brekky …
Albert’s Schloss – Albert’s on Bold Street is a top place for live music, cabaret and classic Euro dishes at night, but go earlier on and you’ll also find one of the best brekkies in Liverpool. It’s served from 9am to midday every day and if you fancy something different the stacked Kroissant Royale with bacon, bratwurst or veggie sausage is definitely one to try.
For pop lovers …
There’s a 1975 party at Camp and Furnace – Fans of the 1975, it’s all about you this Saturday because Camp and Furnace is throwing Liverpool’s biggest 1975 party. It’s going to be back-to-back hits, all the favourite video moments, collabs and a DJ, plus themed cocktails and street food to keep you going til 1am.
For hip hop …
California Love hip hop night on Friday at the Zanzibar – Head back to the 90s and 00s golden age of hip hop and R&B at the Zanzibar this Friday, 11pm til 3am. California Love’s a massive celebration of the classics that’s been getting fans excited up and down the country with DJs playing everything from Jay-Z to Missy Elliot, 2Pac to TLC.
For meat lovers …
Tuck into Fazenda on Exchange Flags – Liverpool’s lucky to have some fantastic restaurants that are heaven for meat lovers and Fazenda on Exchange Flags is absolutely up there. The cooking is authentic to its south American roots and the grilled cuts keep on coming, you just set the pace, along with some amazing Argentinian and Brazilian sides.
Pub of the week …
The Vines is back – The Vines, or the Big House as we all know it, has been given a gorgeous restoration by its new owners over the past few weeks, bringing out lots of the original features and getting them back to how they should be so it’s really looking its best again. One of Lime Street’s best-loved pubs is reopening from midday this Wednesday. More here.
Indie store you must visit …
Explore MerseyMade – Everyone loves a makers market and you don’t have to wait for one to pop up near you because MerseyMade on Paradise Street showcases some brilliant local creatives every day of the week. You’ll find everything from prints to homeware, gifts and cards, from makers including lots who have their studios at MerseyMade.
What about the Wirral …
Food and drink at The Manor in Greasby – If you’re looking to get out of the city and find a venue that’s packed with character and history then The Manor in Greasby ticks all the boxes. It dates back to the 17th century and is now a restaurant and wedding barn with a lovely all-day gastropub style menu plus signature cocktails and G&T serves.
The event not to miss …
Comic Con Liverpool – This is a huge diary date for anyone who’s a fan of pop culture, films, TV or comic books. Comic Con is back at the Exhibition Centre at the weekend, April 1 & 2, with a star line-up headlined by the eleventh Doctor Who Matt Smith plus Paddy Considine, Taylor Lautner, Matthew Modine, The Lost Boys’ Jason Patric, Corey Feldman and loads more.
For Sunday Roast …
Wreckfish Bistro – Eating out at Wreckfish always feels a bit special, thanks to Gary Usher’s expert hand on the menus, and Sunday lunch is no exception. There’s a set two or three courses to choose from including a 35-day aged sirloin of beef for two to share and chocolate lovers should be sure to save room for the delicious Chocolate Oblivion dessert.
For the little ones …
Southport Pleasureland is back – It’s always a major sign that warmer sunnier days are (hopefully) on the way soon, because Southport Pleasureland is open again with the promise of loads of outdoor family fun. There’s all the traditional favourites like the waltzers, ghost train and log flume, plus the miniature railway and lots more rides and games.
For some Culture …
Take in the sights at the Walker Gallery – For a hit of culture that’s easily accessible in such an incredible setting, head to the Walker to see its permanent collections of paintings, artwork and sculptures, and temporary exhibitions – a couple of them finish on Friday including one highlighting great British craft by makers with links to our region.
Out of town must-do …
Antonio’s Bar & Grill in Knowsley Village – Not far from the Shakespeare North Playhouse, Knowsley Village has its own bar & grill inspired by the Bard and old English history. In a former cottage on the Earl of Derby’s estate, Antonio’s is a unique dining experience which was named Restaurant of the Year in the LCR Tourism Awards. Book here.
For open space …
Discover Greenbank Park with lunch at the Wheelbarrow too – the parks are looking beautiful right now with everything blooming into life so it’s the perfect time to get out for a walk around the lake, check out the squirrels mooching about and then head down Greenbank Lane to the Wheelbarrow – the Watering Can’s younger sibling – for a bite to eat.
For a Spring treat…
The intimate Scouse brasserie, set in Duke Street Market’s mezzanine, continues to tell the story of Liverpool’s food and drink provenance as spring now beckons with a brand-new menu.
It is celebrating spring’s bounty with many new dishes including Saltmarsh lamb, raspberry, Smithy’s mushroom, aubergine; Claremont Farm asparagus, Growing Fields’ radish, blood orange and barley; Crossley Farm pork Kyiv, lemon thyme, pink fir potatoes, broad beans and Wirral watercress; and Whipped bay pannacotta, lemon thyme, Aintree honey and Earl Grey.
