With Halloween just around the corner it’s a time to scare ourselves silly with myths and mysteries of spooky sightings.

Merseyside is home to some of the best ghost stories and Wirral is packed with areas said to be paranormal hotspots.

Here are three scary stories especially for Halloween – not for the faint hearted.

The White Lady of Dibbinsdale

By day Dibbinsdale nature reserve in Bromborough is a peaceful retreat of ancient woodland, nature trails and natural wetland. By night it takes on an atmospheric mood, possibly even slightly spooky with a long-standing ghost story to bring fear into the heart of even the most sceptical among us.

The White Lady of Dibbinsdale, sometimes referred to as the Headless Lady, is said to roam the woods near the humpback bridge over Dibbinsdale Brook.

Motorists have reported near misses with the mysterious figure on the road, her ghostly figure disintegrating as they cross the bridge.

So, who is this frightening female? Legend has it she is the spirit of a local nun who had an ill-fated and forbidden relationship with a monk.

Such was their passion, she was torn between her love for the man and her commitment to God. Depending on which version of the story you believe, she either took her own life or was weakened by her mental torture and drowned in the stream, her spirit living on in and around the water, making its way onto the road on dark and gloomy nights.

A more rational explanation is the apparition is in fact a trick of the lights, caused by cars moving at speed over the bridge.

However, the legend lives on so if you take that route on a murky evening this Halloween, keep a look out for the White Lady.

The Mysteries of Mayer Hall

By day Mayer Hall in Bebington has been part of the local community for many years. By night though it is steeped in intrigue and the site of paranormal investigations.

The hall was built in 1878 by the local philanthropist Joseph Mayer. It was constructed on the foundations of a previous building that dated back decades earlier. Could that be the source of the spooky goings on? Or is it, as some people believe, Mayer himself keeping an eye on the property and its surroundings.

Visitors after dark have described hearing unexplained footsteps, strange whispers and experiencing eerie cold spots in certain parts of the building.

The hall has become a popular place for ghost hunts so visit if you dare and find out for yourself.

The hauntings of Bidston Hill

It is one of Wirral’s most famous landmarks, but Bidston Hill is also renowned for some spooky goings on.

From mysterious skeleton discoveries to phantom whispers, witchcraft rumours and even UFOs, this historic site is home to numerous terrifying tales.

One of the longest lasting and most chilling tales surrounds the burial place of an 18th century satanist and suspected murderer named Richard Tilly. In the 1920s there were sightings around the area of a figure in a tattered coat and white wig, on one occasion terrifying a young woman.

In 1922, the floor of a cellar was being dug out to carry out repairs when a discovery was made. It was a coffin and when it was opened the skeleton of a man was inside, wearing a still intact coat and wig similar to those spotted on the mysterious and evil spirit.

The figure has been been spotted again in recent years. Is Richard Tilly still roaming Bidston Hill?

It isn’t just his spirit that creates the eerie atmosphere around this beauty spot.

Bidston Hill has been the rumoured site of everything from witchcraft to sightings of UFOs as well as hidden tunnels built to protect people during war but said to be populated by spirits. All this folklore makes it the perfect place to visit if you want an eerie experience this Halloween or any day of the year.
