After helping Warrington siblings, Sophie (11) and Isabelle (9) Travis, achieve their sixth Blue Peter Badge each – the Green Badge for conservation – Knowsley Safari was inspired to become a Blue Peter Badge attraction.
The sisters visited the Safari in February, with mum Heidi, to find out more about its current conservation projects, before sending letters and pictures about their findings to Blue Peter.
In order to achieve their Green Badge for conservation, Sophie and Isabelle arranged to join Knowsley Safari’s Learning and Discovery team for the day and got to work alongside Learning and Discovery Officer, Laura Howarth, who told them everything they needed to know.
Sophie and Isabelle spent the day meeting with the animals and finding out more about their natural habitats, while also learning about how the Safari supports many conservation projects around the world, and how these are helping endangered animals such as Amur Tigers, Wild Camels and White Rhinos.
Thanks to their Safari visit, the sisters were able to add their Green Badge to their growing collection of Blue Peter Badges, which also includes Silver, Purple, Diamond, Sport and Blue.
Inspired by Sophie and Isabelle – and their enthusiasm for Blue Peter and conservation – Knowsley Safari applied to be a Blue Peter Badge attraction and is now able to offer free entry to anyone who has won a badge in recognition of their achievements.
Blue Peter Badges are special awards for viewers and fans of the show between the ages of six and 15. Once they win an iconic badge, they are able to gain entry into over 200 Blue Peter Badge Attractions around the country, including Knowsley Safari, which is known as a great day out for the whole family, with its 500 acres of land that is home to more than 700 animals including giraffes, tigers and rhino.
Nikki Burton Mallott, Head of Learning and Discovery at Knowsley Safari said: “When we saw how enthusiastic Sophie and Isabelle were about earning their Green Badges, we decided it was the time for us to become a Blue Peter Badge attraction, so we can reward and encourage those children showing an interest in important topics like conservation.”
