Watch: All the highlights from the Run For Rhys 5k at Croxteth Park

A sea of blue shirts made their way around Croxteth Park this morning as the city came together to Run for Rhys.

The inaugural Run For Rhys event took place at Croxteth Park this morning (Sunday 27th August 2017) and hundreds of runners, walkers and even a few dancers turned out to complete either a 1 mile, 3k or 5k course in support of Rhys’ legacy campaign.

Organised by the team behind the Rhys Jones Community Centre CIC, the event aimed to raise vital funds to continue to strengthen community unity within the Croxteth Area. The centre first opened in August 2013 and has firmly established itself as a community hub for residents, young and old.

Rhys’ Dad, Steve Jones said: “The Rhys Jones Community Centre CIC is a vital part of the community. We cannot thank the team enough for their continuing hard work and vision to the centre forward.”

The day began with a 1 mile race, jam-packed with families and little ones (and the odd four legged friend). A beautiful poem, written by Rhys’ dad, Steve was read out by Little Boy Blue actor John McGrellis, before a minute long round of applause and got the race off to a winning start. Backed by Everton FC, a number of famous ‘blues’ faces attended the run including former Everton Manager Joe Royale and Ian Snodin, who were on the start line to wave everyone off with a smile as Z Cars played out across the park.

Good Luck messages from a number of high profile supporters of the Rhys Jones Community Centre CIC were also read out to the cheering crowd. Actor Stephen Graham, who appeared in Little Boy Blue on ITV earlier this year said: “This race is an opportunity for the community to come together, a family event that can raise money to create environments and opportunities that will enhance the inspirations of young people in the area. To be able to create a legacy in Rhys’ name in order to help others is truly wonderful. Good luck to all and have a great day.”

Boxer and Evertonian, Tony Bellew said: “This is a fantastic foundation which is helping various children and families in all walks of life. I wish everyone on the day well and hope it all runs smoothly…..see you guys next year hopefully.”

Our Kate laced up her trainers and joined in the sea of around 650 blue shirts, baring the number 11, in memory of Rhys and completed the 5k course along with Rhys’ mum and dad, Mel and Steve, Speedo Mick and runners of all ages and captured all the action with The Guide Liverpool Go Pro camera.
