People are invited to celebrate Earth Day on Tuesday, April 22nd, 2025, from 10am to 2pm at Wayfarers Arcade in Southport.

This special event at Wayfarers Arcade is designed to help families discover small changes they can make to become more energy efficient, save money, and protect our planet.

Hosted by The Hearth, a new non-profit Community Interest Company (CIC), Earth Day in Southport aims to unite communities to tackle fuel poverty, foster creativity, and build resilience. The Hearth is led by Nadia Speers-Robinson and Rebecca Armstrong, who are excited to meet everyone on the day.

Earth Day is celebrated annually on 22nd April to demonstrate support for environmental protection. Since its inception in 1970, Earth Day has grown to include a wide range of events coordinated globally by Earthday.org, involving over 1 billion people in more than 193 countries. The theme for Earth Day 2025 is ‘Our Power, Our Planet’, encouraging global unity behind renewable energy, but the team at The Hearth have also chosen to interpret this as the power that we as individuals have to make positive change for our planet, this is the focus of their Earth Day event.

Nadia and Rebecca said:

“We’d love to see as many people as possible join us at our free Earth Day celebration in Southport. We’re collaborating with Making Energy Greener, The Engine Room, Wayfarers Arcade, and Scottish Power to bring you this event.

“We’ll provide advice on the small changes you can make to become more energy efficient, save money, and help the planet.

“Take part in one of the sustainable craft activities, or enjoy a free bowl of vegan soup, along with other refreshments.

“We’re encouraging local businesses and organisations to share their efforts in promoting sustainability and ways for people to get involved in green causes.

“Inside The Engine Room, a team from the Geography Faculty at Manchester University will present a fascinating virtual reality installation where you can experience an astronaut’s view of Earth.

“Around six hundred astronauts have been into space and when they look down, they see the whole planet without borders or countries. When they return, they can’t understand why there are so many boundaries.

“We want to encourage people to think broadly and see one planet, one earth, one people, and how we can all contribute to making it a better place.

“Our event is for everyone, but we’d really love to see some of the young people in Southport there, especially those interested in geography or earth sciences, or those who just have a personal interest in making the world a better place.”

On the day there’ll be a smoothie bike challenge with a prize of a smoothie maker for the top scorer!

Making Energy Greener (MEG) will share their expertise around saving money on your energy bills by upgrading heating systems, installing home insulation, talking about air source heat pumps, solar PV and smart heating – they can also offer advice on eligibility for government schemes.

Nadia and Rebecca said:

“Scottish Power will be there to help people understand their energy bills and answer any questions. We’ll address fuel poverty and simple changes to better heat homes and save money on energy bills. Representatives from Southport Eco Centre and The National Energy Agency will also be present.

“There will be a range of stalls inside the arcade, including Jess from A Book Of Petals, who creates beautiful wreaths and floral arrangements using dried flowers, many of which she grows herself, she’ll also be hosting a plant swap, for those of you with green fingers, you can bring along any plants or cuttings to trade with each other.

“If any local businesses or organisations are promoting sustainability and want to get involved, please get in touch. We want to showcase the great things local businesses are doing towards net zero.”

On the day there will be a range of different crafting activities available.

Gang of Elk Forest School will be coming and bringing some nature craft activities for some of the younger attendees.

Upstairs in The Engine Room Jen from Knot Me Macrame will be running a workshop making dreamcatchers from recycled t-shirts.

Emmy Oranges from Art EaseCIC will also be delivering a sustainable art session.

It’s set to be a great day!

Nadia and Rebecca said:

“This is a completely free event, and everyone is welcome to call in at any time.

“We’d love to spark conversations and ideas about becoming more energy efficient.

“Share your ideas and pictures on social media using the hashtag #EarthActionSouthport

“We want people of all ages to learn new skills about energy efficiency and pass them on to others. Let’s work together as a community and see what action we can make happen.

“We have more details yet to announce, so please follow our social media pages for The Hearth for the latest news.”
