We try out Arthur’s, Southport’s new neighbourhood bar and coffee joint
2 years ago
Arthur’s is the new neighbourhood bar and coffee joint in Southport’s Churchtown.
In the home of the old Peaky Blinders, in Cambridge Road, it’s the sister of Arthur’s of Aughton, and looks like proving just as popular.
It opened quietly earlier this month after its transformation from the Peaky Blinders bar, and is following a similar pattern to its West Lancashire sister venue.
Laid back, serving a great selection of wines, beers, cocktails and coffees, alongside a small but perfectly formed food menu.
We called in on a Sunday afternoon and were immediately impressed by the quirky new décor and friendly staff.
There are high stools by the windows giving great people watching opportunities, and comfy looking arm chairs for relaxing by the fire.
Arthur’s is dog friendly and there were a few well behaved pooches hanging out while their owners enjoyed lunch.
We can highly recommend the cheese sharing board, with a great selection of cheeses and added chutney and crackers. The pizza was also proving popular with the lunch crowd and the charcuterie sharing boards look like a good option for meat eaters to graze alongside a cold drink.
If you’re not hungry enough for lunch, you can call in for a coffee and cake with a changeable selection of sweet stuff on offer from Desserts by Dre. There are also snacks like olive bowls, chilli rice crackers and rustic bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar.
The wine list is extensive and classy. We opted for a perfectly chilled Prosecco, served complete with a blackberry, and a latte. We weren’t disappointed.
The prices are in line with similar bars and restaurants, while the service was friendly and efficient without being overbearing – which is a great skill.
There is a decent sized decked area at the front and more tables to the side, so plenty of chances to soak up the sun once the weather starts improving in spring. Evening fairy lights give a cosy, classy feel for dusk and set off the classy new outdoor decor.
So the Peaky Blinders might have moved on from this corner of Southport (there is still a Peaky Blinders bar in Lord Street) but if our experience is anything to go by, Arthur’s will keep locals and visitors happy.
