West Kirby RNLI rescues cyclists cut off by rising tide
6 hours ago

Two cyclists were rescued by West Kirby RNLI on Wednesday, 19 March, after being stranded on Middle Eye due to the rapidly incoming tide.
The volunteer lifeboat crew was tasked by HM Coastguard at approximately 1.06pm to assist the two individuals who had called 999 after realising they were surrounded by water between Little Eye and Middle Eye.
West Kirby RNLI swiftly launched its D class lifeboat, Leonard Pownall, from Sandy Lane slipway and made its way to the scene. On arrival, the crew spotted the two casualties, who, although cold and slightly wet, were unharmed.
With both cyclists and their bicycles safely onboard, the lifeboat returned to Sandy Lane, where additional volunteer crew members carried out welfare checks and provided crucial safety advice on tide times.
The lifeboat was then refuelled and made ready for service.

Richard Diamond, West Kirby Lifeboat Operations Manager, said:
“Always carry a means of calling for help, and if you find yourself in trouble, don’t hesitate to call 999 and ask for the Coastguard so we can come to your aid.”
He also urged visitors to Hilbre Island and Middle Eye to check tide times carefully.
Richard Diamond added:
“Tide times and heights vary throughout the month and can come in much faster than people anticipate. Our advice is to always check the tide times and heights using timetables or the Wirral Council website. As a rule of thumb, you should leave at least three hours before high tide to return safely.”
West Kirby RNLI continues to provide vital lifesaving support along the Wirral coastline, ensuring that those caught out by the tide can be brought to safety.
