We are flying through January, restaurants and bars are reopening after the break, there are more gigs and events to look forward to, payday isn’t too far away, and like many of you also on Dry Jan, I am getting closer to my first bevie of 2019!
Whether you are drinking through the January blues, looking for some tasty grub or just ways to get you out of the house this weekend, hopefully you’ll find something in the list below or, in our weekend roundup video above.
The team from Getintothis have been bringing us the latest music news, gig reviews and opinion for the past 12 years, but it’s not only their online music manual they deliver. They also put on some pretty amazing gigs, showcasing the best of local music talent. Tonight (Friday) Deep Cuts 2 returns to Jacaranda Phase One.
This Liverpool fave has been serving up delicious Thai cuisine since Liverpool ONE opened in 2008, and ten years later it hasn’t lost its sparkle. You eat some Asian food and feel instantly bloated, not at Chaopraya. The dishes are stacked but not too heavy leaving enough room for one of their fancy cocktails, and then drinks next door at the new Thaikhun Street Bar.
When was the last time you went on one of our famous ferries? Mine was this Tuesday and I had forgotten how good an experience it is. They still play ‘Ferry Cross the Mersey’ as you set off, you can jump off at either Seacombe or Woodside or just stay on and take in the views on the 50 minute round trip, and oh what views you get! Watch above as I met First Officer, John to find out how the iconic vessels are controlled, I even got to blow the whistle.
LEAF on Bold Street has one of the biggest brekky menus in the city which includes everything from your normal Full English, lots of veggie and vegan options, pancakes served with everything and best of all, TAPAS BREKKY! Choose three small breakfast plates for just £12. The Bacon, Avocado, Eggs and Halloumi on French Toast is an absolute must. Wash it down with one of LEAF’s famous tea’s or coffees and your weekend morning is sorted.
We asked you to vote for your favourite Sunday Roast in the city and the results are in. We have 18 of the best chicken, lamb, beef and veggie dinners in and around Liverpool. We go to Crosby for Spitroast, the Baltic for Camp and Furnace, over to Wirral for the Viking and into Liverpool ONE for The Clubhouse. Check out the full list here and get on Twitter and Facebook to let us know if we have missed out your favourite.
The World of Hogwarts is brought to Liverpool this Sunday as Bierkeller is transformed into the Great Hall for one day only. This is a family friendly event and there will be a screening of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets with a prize for the best fancy dress costume. There’ll be Butter Beer, magical cocktails and a Hogwarts inspired buffet on the long tables. Potter fans get involved!
Probably the first place I will visit when this Dry January silliness is over. Punch Tarmey’s opened last year and brings the Irish charm to the Baltic, based just to the left of the entrance of Cains Brewery Village. You’ll find great live music, tasty pub grub, live sports and two giant bars. Also Wednesday sees the launch of their brand new comedy night with three stand up acts and students get the 31st January in your diary as their new Student Night with offers and Quiz begins.
The most famous club the planet turned 62 this week so all the more reason to pay it a visit and soak up some live music with a pint or two this weekend. The Cavern Club Beatles are back on stage Friday and Saturday evening and local band ScallyWag kick things off in style on Sunday.
They say theatres are some of the most haunted places on the planet and this weekend you can join an actual paranormal investigation in our city’s most famous theatre, Liverpool Empire. Ghostly sightings have been recorded for years, including that of a young girl in Victorian dress. Join the team from Trinity Paranormal as they get exclusive access behind the scenes, backstage and into the haunted hotspots of the Empire.
If you are getting married anytime soon and need some wedding inso then this is the weekend for you. Exhibition Centre Liverpool host the Liverpool & North West Wedding Show, Camp and Furnace will also be showing off their venue on Sunday and The Venue inside our Royal Liverpool Building will also be open for brides and grooms to be.
I can’t not mention the man behind the giants who was awarded Liverpool’s highest honour this week. Jean-Luc, the mastermind behind Royal De Luxe was given the Freedom of the City at St. George’s Hall on Thursday. This is the guy that dreamt up the giants that have visited our city on three occasions now, bringing in millions of people and pounds and creating memories that will last a lifetime. Congrats Jean-Luc, you are mad as a box of frogs, but we absolutely adore you! Watch my chat with him and Claire McColgan from Culture Liverpool above.
Also a big good luck to everyone taking part in Saturday’s 5K run in memory of knife crime victim Colin McGinty who would have been 40 this year. His sister Laura will be leading the way, with the run starting at the Knife Angel at Liverpool Cathedral on Saturday morning, raising much needed awareness of the damage knife crime can bring. Read Laura’s story here.
You can also listen to my weekly chat with Steve Hothersall on Radio City Talk, this time talking about the impact of Liverpool Film Office in the city and news on what’s coming up at our newly names M&S Bank Arena.
