Following in the footsteps of modern female rappers such as Nicki Minaj, Cardi B and Lil Kim, Stefflon Don has caused tsunami-sized waves throughout the music industry with her explosive verses. None other than Drake has mentored Don in the past, which will have no doubt had a massive influence on her lyrical, and performance, styles when it comes to this side of her sound. It doesn’t get much bigger than that, but she’s still managed to keep her Jamaican roots through her vocal style, setting her apart from the rest.
You might not expect it when listening to her more aggressive rap style on tracks like Real Ting, but Stefflon Don has a singing voice with the ability to match her rapping prowess. Her track, Senseless, which has over 4 million view on YouTube, shows off the two things in perfect harmony, switching between her soulful tones and abrasive rhymes.
Just wait until you see her on stage. Stefflon Don owns any room that she’s in, I mean, you can tell by just looking at her, and the same is true when she takes to the stage. Whether she is putting her stamp on the stage through sheer confidence and charisma, or rallying the crowd into a frenzy with her vibrant moves and outfits to match, she will captivate crowds at the Sefton Park festival.
Whether it is through a two-page spread in Billboard or her Instagram account (700,000 followers), Stefflon Don is well known for her provocative and vibrant style. She not only rivals the likes of Lady GaGa and Nicki Minaj, but actually promotes a positive-body image as she is unafraid of showing off her “plus size” style, even bringing it to the high-street with a collaboration with retailer, BooHoo.
Born in Jamaica, growing up in Netherlands and finding her home in London at the age of 14, a time in her life and environment that will have shaped her sound immensely. That sound came to the forefront at the start of 2017, as she was a hot contender to be the BBC Sound of 2017, narrowly missing out to fellow LIMF artist, Ray BLK. Even though she didn’t get the top spot, Stefflon Don’s fusion of Hip Hop, Grime and modern R&B was still one of the main sounds that we were hearing last year, and are continuing to hear throughout 2018.
Don’s early career saw her collaborate with huge artists such as Wretch 32, Jeremih and Lethal Bizzle, giving her a kick start that many would dream of. This is proven in the fact that she is one of the hottest artists in the world right now, with endorsements, features and a clothing range without having released an album! If you thought those collaborations were impressive, then listen to this. Stefflon Don has also worked with the likes of Demi Levato and LIMF artist, Jax Jones, as well as having a close working relationship with Drake, something that we hope will spawn some material for us to feast upon. (You may recognise her in the background on Drakes new album, although not a credited collaboration just yet).
There we have it another artist you simply cannot miss on the stage at LIMF 2018.
