Why Scousers love Glastonbury
It’s a love that can’t be dimmed by pouring rain, mud, controversial headliners, or pandemic cancellations. Scousers love Glastonbury.
Join any Facebook group about the legendary music festival and you’ll see hundreds of comments that go like this: “How do you guarantee a ticket every year? Move to Liverpool.”
It might be slightly tongue in cheek but there’s no denying that Worthy Farm becomes a small bit of Merseyside every year in June.
We can neither confirm nor deny the claims that there are more Scousers than any other regional group represented at Glastonbury but you can hardly turn round without spotting a girl with her pin curls in on Wednesday night, or a group of lads clad all in grey and black sportswear, off set with fishing hats and with the best mini bar in their rucksack.
Here are five reasons why Scousers love Glastonbury:
It’s a great excuse to get dressed up
Glastonbury is an assault on the senses when it comes to fashion.
You’ll see everything from sequins to band t-shirts, micro shorts to raincoats, cowboy boots, Doc Martins, fringed tops over a bikini, animal print dresses, football tops, Hawaiian shirts and a few people who actually forgot to get dressed at all.
And the Scouse girls always bring the glam.
Do you think Liverpool women let a few minor details like scarce hot water and no electricity stop them? Not a chance. They’re the ones who have the appointments booked at the festival blow dry bars and make-up stalls weeks in advance.
Pre-Glasto preparation is as much about picking a tent and packing the hand sanitizer as getting a fake tan, permanent hair straightening treatments, eye lash application and a fresh set of nails.
This might be a farm but that won’t stop our girls looking their best and we love them for it.
It’s an excuse to get dressed down
While the girls bring the glam, the Scouse lads planning their Glastonbury wardrobe in June are keeping it strictly sportswear.
What could be better for five days walking miles round a farm than a pair of On trainers paired with a Montirex T-shirt and shorts? You’re also likely to spot quite a few tops from Transalpino.
Sportswear is perfect for comfort and keeping cool and if it does rain then a fishing hat and a North Face raincoat are exactly what is needed.
Scouse lads were made for festival casual.
And don’t forget a string for your sun glasses.
We’re resilient
Walk ten miles a day? That’s nothing compared to a hike up Moel Famau.
Boiling hot? We love a sun-tan and have a huge wardrobe for every eventuality.
Rain? Again, nothing compared to a hike up Moel Famau.
A queue to get out of the car park? No hassle, we do it all the time after the match.
Scousers are nothing if not resilient and it will take more than a bit of rain or a heatwave to stop us having fun.
We love a party
Five days off work, non-stop music and bring your own drink. Glastonbury is the ultimate party.
Being at Worthy Farm is like living in another world. Leave your lap-top and troubles at home and immerse yourself in the best festival in the world.
Scousers are well known for loving a party and this is the biggest party on earth, with the best music, a cool atmosphere and lots of like-minded people to chat to and make new friends.
Manchester might think it has the title of the 24-hour party people city, but they’ve got nothing on Scousers out for a good time.
We love music
It’s hardly surprising that people from the home of the Beatles, Echo and the Bunnymen, The La’s and The Farm love good music.
And don’t forget we gave the world Cream, so we know our club tunes too.
You’ll find Scousers down the front at the Pyramid for most of the headliners, but also chilling round the BBC Introducing tent to catch the next big thing.
Woodsies stage is a big Scouse hang-out and the south-east corner is a little bit of Liverpool clubland after dark.
