Liverpool Cathedral is such an incredible place to visit all year round, but Christmas is obviously a particularly special time and this year, as it celebrates its centenary, the cathedral has some fantastic festive events.

There’s loads going on this Christmas at Liverpool Cathedral, in addition to carol services and concerts throughout December, there’s a packed programme for all ages including awe-inspiring art, workshops to get hands-on, a classic Christmas film screening and Santa, of course!

Here’s why you should visit Liverpool Cathedral this Christmas …

The Light Before Christmas is back

This must be the most impressive light and sound show of the season – after the success of previous family-friendly installations, artistic collective Luxmuralis returns with The Light Before Christmas 2024: Starlight. The cathedral’s Gothic architecture becomes a backdrop for epic projections as visitors follow the star and watch the Nativity story being told in a spectacular way through one of the largest immersive experiences in the world.  From November 29 to December 7.

A magnificent setting deserves an outstanding performance and in the operatic world, they don’t come much finer than multi-award winning tenor Russell Watson.

With a CV that includes concerts in front of the late Queen, the Pope and two US Presidents, Salford-born Russell is coming to the cathedral for a special Christmas concert, accompanied by pianist Mike Moran and joined by classical crossover soprano Nancy May and Derwent Brass. December 14.

The family show will have the bonus of an extra short film – The Bear, the Piano, the Dog and the Fiddle â€“  and there’ll even be a visit from the Snowman himself! On December 20.

Make-it-yourself Christmas wreaths have become a big trend, so why not create one that’ll look great on your door and help the cathedral? Chelsea gold medallists louiseanddeb are running two wreath making workshops for novices and more experienced arrangers where you’ll be guided to decorate using spruce, holly, ivy and other foliage, plus seed pods, cones and dried fruit. Tickets include mulled wine and a mince pie. On December 14, 10am & 1pm.

The Christmas tree and crib are beautiful centrepieces over the Christmas period and the service for the lighting of the tree and blessing of the crib is one of the loveliest ways to start the festive season. The service will feature readings, carols sung by the Cathedral Choir, and carols for the whole congregation to join in. It’s free and no booking is needed. On December 8.
