All profits from our first ever online event are being donated to The Florrie and its summer school meals campaign.

Based in Dingle, The Florrie is supporting hundreds of children and families with meals right through the day and activities to make sure kids don’t miss out on any holiday fun.

The Florrie

Timo Tierney, who’s Community Hub Co-ordinator at The Florrie, says extra funding coming in from The Guide Liverpool BIG Summer Quiz players will make a big difference to how many people they can help.

“Having this is brilliant because it means we can support more families and more people in this city and it’s so needed,” he says.

The Florrie and its team of volunteers already puts together around 70 breakfast packs of essentials every week, which families can pick up on a Monday to last them for the week. At lunchtimes they do up to 200 packed lunch boxes which are dropped off in Liverpool 1 and Liverpool 8, and then from 4-5pm there’s a teatime takeaway where kids or teenagers can go and collect a hot meal to take away from the Florrie’s café.

“We’re trying to cover all three meals a day and then we put other things on for kids to do as well,” explains Timo. “We have a cinema night on a Wednesday evening which is free entry with popcorn and a soft drink and the screening, other events and days out.

“We’re trying to do the things that families might not be able to afford and make sure that in such tough times we help and support as many people as we can.”

Timo says although the issue of food poverty has been put in the spotlight more since Covid hit, it’s something The Florrie has been tackling for years.

“This hasn’t just started and it isn’t just happening in the holidays – it’s something which families have to deal with 365 days a year,” he says. “And it can affect anyone. There are a lot of people who are working in every kind of job who are finding it hard to put food on the table.

“Unless it’s under your nose, people don’t always realise but this is something that’s going on behind an awful lot of front doors in our city and countrywide.”

The Florrie relies on donations to keep doing its work, and this summer it’s had funding from MPAC (Merseyside Play Action Council) to provide meals over the holidays.

Timo says The Guide Liverpool BIG Summer Quiz profits will allow them to reach even more families who are struggling.

“We don’t just want to give them anything that’s been thrown together, it’s not a take-it-or-leave-it handout. This is about giving people choices, empowering them and taking away some of that stress of feeding themselves and their families.”

The Guide Liverpool BIG Summer Quiz, in association with Ways To Wow, starts at 7.30pm on Friday August 6th, sign up here to get involved.
