As World Vegan Day comes around on 1st November we’re taking a closer look at the rapid rise of vegan menus, stores and produce on offer in Liverpool. From vegan junk food and award-winning dishes to vegan meals delivered to your door and cruelty-free products for every day life, Liverpool’s vegan offering is on the up.
Veganism isn’t a fad or trend. It isn’t new either. It began back in the 1940’s when a group of veggies in Leicester decided to take their vegetarianism to a new level. Making a conscious decision to cut out all animal products, including food, beauty products and the likes of leather and wool, lead to the start of The Vegan Society.
Did you know….researchers at the University of Oxford discovered that cutting meat and dairy products from your diet could cut your carbon footprint from food by almost 75%? If you’re tempted to go Vegan, help is at hand as the Liverpool Vegan community continues to grow as a rapid pace.
The Liverpool Vegetarian & Vegan Society currently has more than 4 thousand Facebook members who share their recipes, restaurant and product recommendations and offer a warm welcome to vegans visiting or moving to the city.
One member said: “In my opinion Liverpool is great for Vegans, I’m from Newcastle and haven’t lived in Merseyside long but already I’ve seen loads more options then I had back in Newcastle. I could only recommend Down The Hatch as that’s the only one I’ve tried so far, it’s amazing!”
Scouse Veg, a review website and campaign group for Liverpool vegans and veggies, champions brand new local business and monthly social gatherings. (They’ve also appeared on Come Dine With Me!). Scouse Veg also works closely with Merseyside Animal Rights to organise demonstrations across the UK. If anyone knows the best place to get a chia latte, its these guys!
