Cancel the big shop and prepare for a sensory feast because this week’s Your Guide Liverpool is all about food and culture and there’s something for everyone!
Last week we saw the Sgt Pepper 50th Anniversary celebrations kick off with a phenomenal fireworks display that was heard for miles around. We’re continuing the Fab Four fun throughout the week listing further events and happenings based on the iconic album. Alongside that we’ve lined up a side order of delicious world cuisine and a few cheeky cocktails all set to a reggae soundtrack. Here’s Your Guide Liverpool for the week ahead (5th – 11th June 2017)…
Monday 5th June
Bacon and Shiraz, a match made on North John Street
42% of the population say the bacon sandwich is the greatest all-time breakfast creation, and we’re not ones to argue with science! Getting Better? DJ Spooky explores Sgt Pepper at 50, Royal Philharmonic
We’re living in interesting times. But is it, as Paul McCartney sang, getting better all the time? That’s what Washington DC-born composer, artist and author Paul D Miller, aka DJ Spooky, sets out to answer in Getting Better? at the Philharmonic this Monday at 7:30pm. Intrigued? Monday treats at The Club House, Liverpool One
Whatever the weather you can banish the back to work blues at The Club House, Liverpool One. Our summer menu faves look equally as good inside the stylish restaurant and bar, you could almost be in Morocco with a taste of their famous hanging kebabs. Dinner, sorted. Menus and more here.
Tuesday 6th June
A taste of Catalonia at Neon Jamon, Berry Street
Lunch at Neon Jamon reminds us of lazy afternoons on holiday. Treat yourself to a bit of sunshine food this week with 2 tapas for £10 between 12-5, Monday to Friday. Our top choices are the manchego and spinach croquetas and Iberico pork ribs….no wait the chorizo rolls….or maybe the Galician clams?! Choose for yourself here.
Take a stroll and Fix a Hole at Stanley Dock
If the weather plays ball this week, how about taking in a bit of culture with a stroll through the city’s historic docklands to check out the Sgt Pepper 50th anniversary art work, ‘Fixing A Hole’ created by American artist, Judy Chicago? Standing tall right next to Titanic Hotel, this technicolour masterpiece is a site to behold. More info here.
Wednesday 7th June
Mid-week mega burger at Almost Famous, Parr Street
To be fair looking at the size of that burger, its unlikely you’d need to eat again until your roast on Sunday! But if you’re hankering for a punch in the tastebuds, head to Almost Famous, Parr Street for the best in old school burgers, fries and boozy milkshakes. Menus and more here.
It’s all about the base at Buyers Club, Hardman Street
After sharing the decks at Baltic Weekender 2017, PAUSE have taken a tumble into the pinball machine of parties this Wednesday at Buyers Club, Hardman Street. Expect a soundclash of 16-bit proportions, as GHOST go up against PAUSE for the first time ever. More event info here.
Wednesday Date Night at Hot Water Comedy, Seel Street
Liverpool’s ONLY purpose built comedy club is open 7 nights a week and this Wednesday night is dedicated to the hottest talent off the telly box! The show will feature a recognisable TV name closing every show with an extended 30 minute set. Check out the line-up and get tickets here.

Finger lickin’ chicken wings at Red Dog Saloon, Bold Street
Following it’s launch just a few weeks ago, Red Dog Saloon has already amassed a huge legion of fans thanks to their divine chicken wings in particular. Bold Street’s newest resident has brought an authentic taste of America to the heart of Liverpool, and we cant get enough. Menus here.
Being 64 aint so bad at Pier Head
Taking centre stage on our iconic waterfront (and being broadcast live on BBC Radio Merseyside) is ‘When I’m 64’ a mass participation event to celebrate the boyhood track penned by Paul McCartney as part of the #SgtPepper50 anniversary. 64 choirs (of all ages) from across the city will join together to perform the track which has inspired this project. Three Piggies get the ale in on Allerton Road
Who doesn’t enjoy a little Thursday night tipple? Three Piggies, Allerton Road has brand new beers to try out including Madhatter’s Te Punga sour – perfect for muggy days. Positive Vibrations at the Baltic Triangle
Liverpool’s award-winning celebration of reggae music and Jamaican heritage returns for two days this week, with a jam-packed weekend of cultural appreciation and positivity. Headlining this year’s festival will be legendary 2-Tone band The Selecter and King of the sound system, Jah Shaka. Find out more here.

In its first ever pop-up event, Red Door, Berry Street invites you to nail your summer wardrobe with a vintage fair from 2-6pm. Positive Vibration continues with more Reggae festival fun
Kids are welcome at the Saturday reggae festival, taking place at the Baltic Triangle. Get your little ones started early with their appreciation of a great beat with workshops in craft, poetry, soft play and more. Sgt Pepper at 50: Lovely Rita, Hope Street
One of the most hotly-anticipated events of the Sgt Pepper 50th Anniversary celebrations, this procession represents the Lovely Rita track (written about trying to avoid a parking ticket) and is likely to be a memorable one. Liverpool’s own traffic wardens are the inspiration behind this inventive performance that will start at the Metropolitan Catherdral and end in St James’ Gardens at the Anglican Cathedral.
