Your Music Lovers Guide to August in Liverpool

August is definitely the climax of festival season with more gigs and gatherings than you can shake plastic pint cup at.

Merseyside venues are bursting with new music, old skool gatherings and of course the mighty Creamfields and Reminisce round up a summer of musical madness. This month we’re heading to a diverse range of venues, from The Empire Theatre to Arts Club and the fields of Daresbury!

Here’s your music lovers guide to August……

Regina Spektor, Liverpool Empire Theatre, 7th August

Regina Spektor is one of those names that everybody knows, whether they know exactly why or not. This is testament to the timeless work that she has done in and around the industry. The Empire Theatre is the perfect venue for this classy lady. Spektor delivers a show reminiscent of the ‘good old days’ whilst somehow remaining quirky and current. This rare talent is sure to go down in history as one of the greats, so why not be part of history? Tickets here.

The Bido Lito! Social, 81 Renshaw, 17th August

The Bido Lito! Social has proved a hit amongst gig goers since starting up earlier this year. The event has taken on a life of its own having collaborated with 81 Renshaw to bring the lively night in to what is one of Liverpool’s best small, almost hidden, music venues. This month’s line-up features Luna, TV ME and headliner, St. Jude the Obscure. Find out more here.

Stealing Sheep, Buyers Club, 17th August

Stealing Sheep are much cherished export of the city, travelling all over the world representing Liverpool on every festival stop and tour date. This August the female trio return to their hometown to remind us what we’ve been missing. The live show is polished yet raw, energetic yet classy and just generally mesmerising. Whether a seasoned fan, or a complete newbie to the group, the 17th August should be spent at Buyers Club for any music fan. Find out more here.

Marmozets, Arts Club, 19th August

Marmozets exploded on to the national circuit back in 2007 with various EP releases before their debut album The Weird and Wonderful Marmozets in 2014. We’re waiting patiently for a follow up release from this tour-de-force of alternative and heavy rock, so a good old-fashioned “knees up “will suffice. Front woman, Becca Macintyre, is sure to spend a lot of time swinging from the rafters and generally running riot on stage at the Arts Club. Details here.

Shout About It!, District, 19th – 20th August

As the festival season starts to reach its climax there is still time to catch these feasts of music right here in Merseyside. Shout About It Live is a hybrid festival of live music and photography at The Batlic Triangle’s District. Featuring local talent such as Eleanor Nelly, Motherhood and Merseyrail Sound Station Prize winner, Astles. District not only plays host to musical talent such as these, and many more, but the venue doubles up as an exhibition of some of the best live music photography from all over the UK; very artsy. Lana Del Rey, Echo Arena, 22nd August

Lana Del Rey does what most artists struggle to: she retains her cult status and artistic integrity whilst being one of the biggest stars in the business these days. Her latest album, Lust for Life, came out only last month and has reminded the world why she is as big a star as she is. We welcome her to our biggest venue this summer for a show that will no doubt shower gig goers in creativity and spectacle. Be quick and get tickets here.

Creamfields, Daresbury, 24th – 27th August

Although not strictly held in Merseyside, Creamfields has become synonymous with our music scene. The winner of the UK Festival Award for Best Major Festival celebrates its 20th anniversary, and its going to be off the scale. With a line-up that includes big names such as Diplo, Annie Mac, Fat Boy Slim and many more it’s easy to see why it has become the countries premier EDM festival. The Vryll Society, The Magnet,  25th August

With the release if their latest single, Sacred Flight, The Vryll Society are all over the region at the moment including one of our fave city venues, The Magnet. After grafting away in the rehearsal room and basement venues, these guys are tearing up 2017 showing everyone what they’ve got in a big way. If you see lots of tired, sweaty souls wandering down Hardman street on the 25th, you know where they’ve been. Find out more here.

The Cavern 60th Anniversary Concert, The Phil, 28th August

The Cavern Club opened its doors on 16 January 1957 and this special show celebrates the 60th anniversary of ‘The Most Famous Club In The World’. Undoubtedly, without the 292 gigs The Beatles played here between February 1961 and August 1963, The Cavern’s story would be a very different one. From this period, other artists exploded on to the musical scene; Gerry & the Pacemakers, Cilla Black and many more. Everyone wanted to play this iconic venue, and they did; The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Kinks, Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Ben E King, Rod Stewart, Status Quo, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Queen. Today The Cavern is a thriving live music venue, still attracting the big names. Artists to have played here in more recent years include; Oasis, Travis, Arctic Monkeys, Adele, Jessie J, Jake Bugg, Joe Bonamassa and of course, in 1999, the return of Sir Paul McCartney. Jens Lekman, Leaf, 30th August

Harvest Sun Promotions present Swedish musician, Jens Lekman. Noted for his guitar-based pop with heavy use of samples and strings, with lyrics that are often witty, romantic, and melancholic, Jens has released three albums and several EPs since 2003. Leaf on Bold Street provides the perfect setting for an artist such as this, showing just how well we can cater for artists of every kind. So there you have it. What more could you ask for? Two festivals, a retro diva, two rock bands, a chart topper, an anniversary, a Scandinavian singer songwriter, local folk and networking style social…phew! As with every month, Liverpool has something for every music fan.
