Spooky season is upon us and there’s loads of things to do this half-term around Liverpool City Region

It’s Halloween and half term so the perfect time to enjoy a family day out in the region. Here are ten ideas to keep the kids happy.

Pick your own pumpkins at Claremont Farm

The pumpkin field is back open at Claremont Farm and is free to enter, simply pay for what you pick.

The takeaway trailer is open for snacks and wheelbarrows are available to help you carry all those pumpkins.

Well behaved dogs are welcome.

Monty the Mersey Monster, New Brighton

A river monster is lurking below the deep waters of New Brighton. Monty the Mersey Monster: protector of the Mersey Estuary, named in 1207 by Sir Percival Montangle, a fiery dragon returning home in a spectacular blaze of light.

See Monty on 1 and 2 November at New Brighton Marine Lake.

Performance times:

5.30pm – Monty the Mersey Monster

6pm – Friends of New Brighton Marine Lake

7pm – Monty the Mersey Monster

8.30pm – Monty the Mersey Monster

Each Monty the Mersey Monster performance lasts approximately 30 minutes.

Spooky SCRAPtastic workshops at Eureka, Birkenhead

Eureka gets its Halloween spook on this half term and fancy dress is frighteningly encouraged.

From Monday 21 – Friday 25 October and Monday 28 October – Friday 1 November kids can enjoy the Spooky SCRAPtastic Workshops in the Theatre.

Drop-in between 11am-1pm and 2pm-4pm, Workshops are suitable for children aged three years plus.

SCRAPtastic is a family friendly craft session, centred around using junk and recycled materials to create your own artworks to take home.

Spooky Stories and at Wallasey Central Library

Spooky stories and crafts at Wallasey Central Library for half term, ages four – eight years. Fancy dress optional.

It costs £1.50 per child. Adults must remain with children during the sessions.

Mortimus Spook’s Museum of Curiosities, Ness Gardens

Expect another hilariously spine-tingling Halloween show as Mortimus shows off his strange collection, cracks jokes and thrills the family with his marvellous magic.   

The kids can go along in their favourite Halloween costume to show Mortimus how scary they can be.

The show on 30 October runs at approximately 35 minutes and can be found in the lecture theatre at Ness.

Ticket Price – £6.00 per person.

Twitchy Witch at Southport Food Market

This Halloween, join a spellbinding adventure with the Twitchy Witch who will hop on her broomstick to Southport Food Market with Hansel, Gretel, and the Knowing Owl determined to put an end to her spooky antics.

The family-friendly show is filled with magic, excitement, and a dash of mystery.

See it on 31 October. Multiple time slots are available, adults go free with children, recommended for ages three plus.

There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly at The Atkinson, Southport

With a captivating combination of live action, animation and puppetry, this magical re-telling of There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly is guaranteed to surprise and delight children and nostalgic adults in equal measure.

As a special Halloween treat kids get to meet the spider at the end of the show. Spooky fancy dress encouraged.

Approximate running time: 70 minutes. No interval. Age guideline: two plus.

Halloween Family Carvery, Formby Hall Golf Course

Get ready for a frightfully fun Halloween feast with the whole family at this Spooky Halloween Carvery, where ghoulish delights await. 

Party games, Halloween crafts, disco and fun for the children along with a delicious carvery lunch. 

Saturday 26 October, 12.30 – 4pm

Adults £30, children £15, infants free (0-two years).


Enjoy a beach and woodland walk in Formby

Get wrapped up, jump on a Merseyrail train and make your way to Formby beach this half term. Get off at Freshfield and make your way to the woods, either along Victoria Road or take a more scenic route across the golf course path (be careful at the level crossing) and wander through the woods to the sand dunes and open sands of one of the best beaches in the region.

Finish your day off with fish and chips from The Good Catch next to the station, or hot chocolate and a cake at Kiosk Coffee.


Supernatural Activities at WWT Martin Mere, Burscough, West Lancs

Families can tap into the magic that’s all around them at WWT Martin Mere this October half term, where wand making, potion crafting and spell casting are just a few of the mystical activities that will keep curious minds bewitched.

The centre’s popular Viking village, Mere Tun, will be transformed into a Witches’ Wetland for two weeks of spells and potions, from 21 October until 3 November.

The event promises activities that can involve everyone, from grandparents to toddlers. It includes making a wand from willow, discovering the mysteries of wetland plants to make magical potions, and casting spells. All in the enchanting world of WWT Martin Mere wetland nature.
