Into July and we’re definitely starting to get a strong summer holiday feeling – if you’re counting down the days to going away, or just planning a nice little stay closer to home on the Mersey Riviera, here are 12 things to get in your diary this week …
Heathers the Musical at the Empire
Based on the 80s film starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, this award-winning rock musical version of the American high school dark comedy comes to Liverpool off the back of two hit West End seasons. It centres around good girl Veronica Sawyer who teams up with her sociopathic boyfriend in a plot to kill the cool clique. From Tuesday July 4 to Saturday July 8. Book tickets here.
Gino’s Sky Bar Terrace
The Sky Bar at Gino’s at INNSiDE Liverpool on Old Hall Street already has one of the most amazing views anywhere the city and now it’s even better because there’s an outdoor rooftop terrace overlooking the river. It runs the full length of the 18th floor Sky Bar and is the perfect sunny spot for cocktails while you graze on Italian small plates from the cicchetti menu. Find out more here.
Try the Hawksmoor steak butty on the new lunch menu
If you fancy something lighter in the daytime than a full sirloin or ribeye, without sacrificing the steak, then the new lunch special menu at Hawksmoor in India Buildings has got it sorted. The exec chef there has found the key ingredient to take an already delicious steak sandwich to the next level – it’s all in the porcini hollandaise! Book your table here.
Alice in Wonderland at the Playhouse
This is Lewis Carroll’s classic with a 21st century Scouse update as we follow Alice on her adventures with a host of familiar, but quirkily different, characters. It’s from the producers behind the Everyman’s rock and roll panto and it’s packed with original pop songs, loads of funny lines and a really feelgood story that’s great for all the family. Liverpool Arab Arts Festival
Liverpool Arab Arts Festival is celebrating 25 years this year with a programme of new commissions, performances and workshops. The festival combines traditional and contemporary Arab culture and showcases the best UK and international Arab artists through visual art, music, dance, film, theatre, literature and digital events. From Thursday July 6 to Sunday July 16.
Visit Port Sunlight for the perfect day out
Port Sunlight village makes for a fascinating day out – you can visit the museum and find out all about William Lever and his vision for creating a community for his workers, and learn more about the science of soap in the new interactive SoapWorks family experience. Plus, one not to be missed for Peaky Blinders fans, there’s an exhibition on until Sept 10 featuring costumes from the series.
Coffee and cake at the new Bold Street Coffee inside The Plaza
Bold Street Coffee is always worth a visit if you’re up that end of town, but now you can enjoy it in the business district too. Drop in to The Plaza, off Old Hall Street, for one of their speciality coffees – go iced if it’s a hot sunny one – and a gorgeous slice of cake or a donut.
Foo Fighters tribute show at Camp and Furnace
If you weren’t lucky in the mad scramble for Foo Fighters tickets when they went on sale a few days ago, or even if you were and you just want more, then head to Camp and Furnace this Saturday. They’ve got Foo Fighters GB, the number one UK tribute band, playing the band’s greatest hits live all night so it’s the nearest to the real thing you’re going to find. Book tickets here.
David Walliams: Bad Dad at the Bombed Out Church on Sunday
Kids of all ages love David Walliams books, and now’s a chance to see one of them brought to life. This Sunday the Bombed Out Church has got an afternoon performance of Bad Dad telling the funny, frantic tale of Frank and his father Gilbert as they struggle to escape the clutches of the local crime lord and clear Gilbert’s name.
Breakfast at Glass Onion on Allerton Road
Glass Onion isn’t just the Knives Out film with Daniel Craig, it’s also a little gem of a café on Allerton Road specialising in tasty homemade veggie and vegan food. The cakes, scones and fresh-basked cookies are a thing of beauty all day, up until 4.30pm, but it’s worth getting there early because it’s a lovely place for breakfast or brunch. Visit the Photie Man exhibition at the Walker
Photographer Tom Wood was known as the Photie Man to the Scousers who he focused on over the space of five decades. This exhibition at the Walker celebrating his work is an incredible snapshot of our city over the years, capturing the spirit of Liverpool and showing how the people and the place has changed. Watch Wimbledon at Titanic Hotel
If you’re a tennis fan then the next two weeks are all about Wimbledon and who’s going to be lifting those famous trophies at the end of the tournament. Soak up the atmosphere from SW19 on the Colonnades at Titanic Hotel with a Wimbledon-inspired strawberries and cream afternoon tea and glass of fizz from the Lanson bike bar.
