Liverpool on the look out for school crossing patrol staff

Fancy something new? How about helping to see our roads and kids safer by applying for one of the twenty-six school crossing patrol jobs currently available in the city?

Liverpool has 68 school crossing sites, helping guide children across the road at the start and end of the school day – but there are 26 vacancies, meaning some sites are currently without a permanent member of staff.

The council is working with the affected schools and local ward councillors to promote the vacancies among parents and the local community.

School crossing patrol staff are required to work seven hours a week (1 hour, 24 minutes per day) during term time, and earn between £10.17 and £10.58 an hour.

Applicants should be fit and healthy, and must also enjoy meeting people.

Full training and a free uniform are provided.

Successful candidates will be subject to a medical assessment and a DBS background security check.

Liverpool City Council’s Road safety co-ordinator, Andy Codd, said:

“Many people affectionately remember their own School Crossing Patrol from their time at a school.

“They are an integral part of the community, helping keep our children safe as they travel to and from school, and it is an extremely rewarding job.

“We are on the lookout for sociable people with a bit of spare time on their hands who enjoy the outdoors and want to earn some extra money to fill the vacancies that we have across the city.”

Jason Hourston has been a School Crossing Patrol for Leamington Primary School for the last five years, and said:

“I have found that it has been really good in terms of getting to know the local community and for them to get to know me.

“I always give the children a smile to help get their day off to a good start, and it can really turn their day around if they are feeling nervous or unsure – particularly when they were returning to school after lockdown.

“You don’t just get to know the children but you also get to know motorists as well as they travel the same route each day.

“I remember my own School Crossing Patrol from when I attended Monksdown Primary School and she was always smiley and happy, so I make sure I am the same.”
