Days out you can double up on with Merseyrail this Bank Holiday weekend

Advertorial

You can’t beat a good old-fashioned street party and there’ll be loads of those as we wish Her Majesty a happy anniversary and mark her historic 70 years on the throne.

And now there are even more reasons to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

For the first time ever on Merseyrail you can buy a 2-Day Saver to get you two days of travel across Liverpool City Region for the long weekend of Thursday, June 2 to Sunday, June 5.

The Jubilee 2-Day Saver will be valid all day, on any two consecutive days on Northern and Wirral lines, and the all-areas ticket will be just £10 for adults and £5 for children* (available online and at Merseyrail stations).

Suzanne Grant, Commercial Director at Merseyrail, said:

“We know that many people across the City Region will be planning to get out and about over the long Bank Holiday as the country celebrates Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee.

“We wanted to offer a special ticket to make Merseyrail the obvious choice for those heading to events, meeting up with loved ones or simply enjoying some extra well-earned time off.”

You can plan your journeys online at www.merseyrail.org – which will also show you the cheapest ticket for your grand days out – and head to Destination Merseyside for inspiration, events and activities within walking distance from the 68 stations across the Merseyrail network.

And don’t worry if you have to change trains at Central and Moorfields stations to get to where you’re going, because with regular trains and services every 15 minutes, you can be sure you won’t be waiting for long!

So if you fancy a great day out (or two) it’s a chance to get twice the fun – and just look at these days out you can double up on this Bank Holiday weekend…

Taste Liverpool/ Chester Zoo

Taste Liverpool. Drink Bordeaux

FROM food and drink for you, to feeding time for the animals: two different days each guaranteed to offer tons of fun.

First stop could be Taste Liverpool, Drink Bordeaux, a brand-new festival taking place from June 2-5 to coincide with the Jubilee celebrations. Some of Liverpool’s best-known chefs and restaurateurs will be taking over three of the city’s foodie destinations – Hope Street, Bold Street and Castle Street – with cookery demonstrations, food-inspired cultural events, and special festival menus.

Nearest stations: Moorfields/James Street/Central

Then, for day two, get set to have a royally good time at Chester Zoo, always a good bet for a great day out with its animals, fabulous gardens and green spaces (there are 35,000 animals in 128 acres of gardens). There are loads of fun attractions too like its play area and Lazy River Boat Trip – and when you visit, you support conservation projects being undertaken by the zoo and its staff.

Nearest station: Chester station

Southport/ Albert Dock

Merseyrail

Southport Market

From the sun and sand of one of the region’s most popular seaside resorts to the city sights of the Waterfront – it’s a belting, two-day treat.

Starting off with Southport, you’ve got a beautiful beach that spreads for miles, gorgeous gardens, watersports, shops galore and even a Victorian Pier (the second longest in the UK at 1,000 metres).  If you fancy thrilling rides you can take a trip to Southport Pleasureland, and then grab a bite or raise a glass at the new-look Southport Market.

Nearest station: Southport Station

Albert Dock’s always fantastic place to visit, with tons of places to eat and drink from breakfast, lunch and dinner – to evening cocktails overlooking the dockside. But there’s more to it than that, with cultural attractions like Tate Liverpool, the Merseyside Maritime Museum, and the International Slavery Museum; and The Beatles Story where you can learn more about the Fab Four. There’s lots of indie shops and great waterfront walks too.

Nearest station: Central/James Street

Baltic Weekender/ Taste Liverpool

Consider this two courses on a delicious day out menu – the perfect food and music combination.

The Baltic Weekender is back for June 3-4. The festival takes over the Baltic Triangle with another mega line-up of house, techno, grime, bass music and everything in between, with artists including Ben UFO, DJ Seinfeld, Dreya Mac, CruCast Takeover, and more…

Nearest station: Central

Taste Liverpool

And, well, we’ve already told you about Taste Liverpool, Drink Bordeaux, which is set to get the city buzzing, so why wouldn’t you want to get down and toast Elizabeth R and celebrate her monumental reign and the fab food and drink of Liverpool?!

Nearest stations: Moorfields/James Street/Central

Formby Beach/ Liverpool ONE

You can spend the day relaxing, chilling, and embracing the sea air, before hitting the shops.

There are so many reasons why Formby is one of the most popular beaches – and it’s not just because of its pinewoods which are home to the cutest (and very famous) red squirrels. There are miles of glorious sand and dramatic sand dunes as well as walking trails which reveal a prehistoric past, and it’s the perfect for a family picnic to celebrate 70 years of the monarch.

Nearest station: Formby

Well, it’s not just about the shops – although there’s plenty of those from high street chains to designer stores at Liverpool ONE – there’s also tons for kids and families to do in this heart-of-the-city area. You can watch a film on the big screen, have a game of ping pong at Roxy Ball Room, test your skills of logic with Escape Live, or see how you’d fare on a world-famous course at golf simulator attraction On The Green… you can even enjoy its free Heritage Trail exploring 300 years of Liverpool’s past. And did we mention all the amazing bars and restaurants?

Nearest station: James St

West Kirby/ World Museum and Liverpool Museum

Transport yourself from coast to culture without the need for a time machine.

On a sunny day (or even not) West Kirby Marine Lake is a great place to practice tons of water sports, or you might just want to head to the prom or a stroll or the beach for a paddle, build a sandcastle or enjoy a game of rounders. But away from the front, West Kirby’s also known for its quirky streets with loads of fascinating Tudor architecture, independent shops, and fab cafes, bars and restaurants.

With lots of hand-on activities and exhibits, there’s plenty to see and do at either World Museum / Museum of Liverpool from uncovering the mysteries of the ancient Egyptian World to learning about Liverpool lives in the Blitz. But Doctor Who fans especially will love the new exhibition at World Museum in William Brown Street, Doctor Who Worlds of Wonder, with epic monsters, costumes and props… science as it explores the Doctor’s adventures through space and time.

Nearest stations: Liverpool Lime Street / James Street

* For those making shorter journeys, a one area ticket will be available at Merseyrail stations only and will ÂŁ8 for adults and ÂŁ4 for children.

** Those travelling by train also have the chance to win a £50 Love2Shop voucher if they find a ‘platinum ticket’ in one of the specially themed chocolate bars which will be given away in the network’s MtoGo stores over the four-day holiday with any purchase (while stocks last).
