See sky-high spectacular ‘A Thousand Feet Deep’ at Stadt Moers Park in Whiston this weekend

Stadt Moers Park in Whiston’s set to explode into life this weekend with an incredible outdoor show which is set to thrill spectators with a magical take on the town.

It might be called A Thousand Feet Deep, but the action takes place high up in the air with a daring and dramatic performance exploring the history and spirit of Knowsley.

The event is a highlight celebration of Knowsley as this year’s Liverpool City Region Borough of Culture, and Councillor Shelley Powell says: “We always wanted this year to reflect what makes our borough special and this event will really do that, as it explores our heritage as makers and manufacturers, and tells our unique story in such a creative and atmospheric way.”

And she adds: “This is really going to be something incredibly special to see.”

A Thousand Feet Deep soars into life with three performances on Friday, October 7; Saturday, October 8, and Sunday, October 9, starting at 8.30pm each evening.

Outdoor theatre makers, Periplum, worked with communities across the borough to gather stories, histories, myths, and legends, that have been translated into a 50-minute immersive production taking the audience on a thrilling and atmospheric journey, accompanied by a soundtrack by Barry Han, Mike Simmonds, Claire Raftery and Damian Wright.

Special stage effects and music will fill the air, and aerial performers will bring to life magical characters who are calling from the quarrylands – the caverns, mines, and secret tunnels where the traces of Knowsley’s ancestors’ labour and legends can still be found.

And Huyton-born actress Eithne Browne; local author, playwright and rapper Ashleigh Nugent, and Liverpool-born actress and comedian Keddy Sutton will narrate the action as it fills the skies, delving into Knowsley’s industries and tales of the people who powered them.

Cllr Powell, Knowsley Council’s Member for Communities & Neighbourhoods, adds: “We’re delighted to bring Periplum to Knowsley to create this spectacular performance. They have worked with the local community to gather stories and memories, and it’s fantastic that these local performers of such talent and experience are giving them a voice.”

Tickets to the event by Knowsley Council, with additional funding from Arts Council England, are free although there is a £2 administration fee per ticket.
