10 places to eat on Aigburth Road

Aigburth Road has to be one of the busiest in south Liverpool, linking town and the airport and as the main route to Sefton Park.
Like its Lark Lane neighbour, it’s also home to some great restaurants and cafes so if you’re looking for somewhere new to try, or maybe just fancy going back to an old favourite, here are 10 places to eat on Aigburth Road …
Mahoe Blue
This little restaurant opposite the entrance to Sefton Park has brought all the flavours and passion for sharing good food direct from Jamaica to south Liverpool.
Owned by husband and wife chefs, it’s getting five-star reviews for dishes created from family recipes like ackee and saltfish, rice and peas, spicy okra fries, jerk chicken and a rum punch that packs a punch.
Catherine Braidy
Situated just a stones throw from the beautiful Sefton Park, Catherine Braidy is a boutique cake parlour offering the finest of sweet treats.
Catherine Braidy serves up cake by the slice, cupcakes, tray bakes, top class coffee, tea and soft drinks.
Justino’s
A quick look at the supercars often parked outside tells you Justino’s is a popular choice, not just with locals but with a celeby crowd. The draw is a combination of an impressive menu of Italian dishes, including some beautiful speciality pasta, plus Sunday roast, brunch and afternoon tea, cocktails and a buzzy atmosphere made even better at weekends when there’s live music, Friday and Saturday, 8-10pm.
Churrasco Steak House
A traditional style steakhouse, offering everything from flat iron to ribeye, rump and the rest and you can have your steak served raw on a 350-degree lava stone to let it cook just as you like it.
The steak stone stays hot until you get to even the last mouthful, and cooking this way keeps in more of the natural juices. As well as a stack of starters, there’s a selection of delicious sides to choose from, including Jerk-grilled corn ribs and salt and pepper veg, plus a choice of fries, salads and sauces.
At Aigburth, there’s the Churrasco cabin for outdoor dining, with five private booths, a personal server and, when the weather’s nice, skylights to let the sunshine in.
You can even take the dog (although there’s a good chance they’ll want a mouthful of your meal too!).
Space Bar & Grill
Space started life as a coffee shop, on the corner of Mersey Road, but now it’s so much more. It still gets a daytime crowd for drinks, breakfast and lunch but it’s got an evening menu too with speciality kebabs and burgers as well as steak night on Thursdays.
There’s the bonus of live jazz on Friday nights and a colourful courtyard that’s a gorgeous suntrap – the perfect place for a chilled wine or glass of fizz.
Stuart’s Bar and Kitchen
At the entrance to Sefton Park is the Sefton Park Hotel and Stuart’s Bar & Kitchen, named after The Beatles original bassist Stuart Sutcliffe who used to live at the address. It’s a lovely setting that attracts more than just hotel guests thanks to a menu focused on locally sourced fresh produce.
The Sunday roast is a big crowd-pleaser along with gourmet burgers and pizza, and it has a large beer garden.
Cartoccio
Street food’s a big deal in Italy, they do it brilliantly, and Cartoccio has kept up the tradition here in south Liverpool. Facing Lark Lane, it serves delicious filled pizza pockets stuffed to order and salads in the daytime then in the evening it’s antipasti and pasta.
The desserts, no surprise, are absolutely fabulous, especially the homemade tiramisu and affogato with coffee or amaretto.
Just Wings
No real need to explain what they do … it’s wings, any which way you like! Go old school traditional, boneless, in a wrap or a burger, then all you’ve got to do is choose your sauce or dry rub and pick out a side.
Heads up, the American salted fries are the number one, but you might want to squeeze in some onion rings too.
Christakis
Christakis Greek restaurant has long been an institution in Liverpool!
Up towards Cressington Station, it has just the same fun vibe as Duke Street did, and the same authentic menu including the sharing platters and mezze it’s well known for.
The party theme ramps up on Fridays and Saturdays with belly dancers and a DJ.
Sakara
On the opposite corner to Space, family-run Sakara’s motto is ‘eat well, drink well’ and locals love it so must be getting both right. It serves a menu of Middle Eastern, North African and Med-inspired mezze, including lots of veggie dishes such as Persian baked cauli and roast beetroot with goats cheese, all in a nice relaxed atmosphere.
