A new mural in honour of former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler has been unveiled in Anfield today.

The huge artwork by street art specialists MurWalls, has been created on the side of a house in Coningsby Road on the corner with Anfield Road.

Paying homage to Robbie Fowler, whose nickname was ‘God’, it features the ex-Liverpool and England player in an impressive design resembling three stained-glass church windows – and it’s there at the request of another ex-Liverpool player, Jan Molby.

Marc Silver, CEO and founder of MurWalls who’ve created the masterpiece, said:

“We did a mural of Jan Molby and we always, after we’ve done a mural for a legend, have a quick chat and ask who they think deserves a mural who hasn’t got one yet.  Without thinking about it, he said Robbie Fowler. How’s there not a Robbie Fowler mural?

“And so we made it happen.”

Work on the mural began on Monday evening and was completed by Wednesday afternoon.

It was designed by Luke Gray and brought to life by artists Adam Brezaux, Daniel Norton, Mark Rowe, and Andrew Mills.

The left-hand pictures shows Robbie – who earlier posed beside the epic mural – with arms raised in celebration of a goal, and the right side image has him running with the ball.

The main central image is a giant head-and-shoulders picture of the father-of-four.

And there’s something unique about MurWalls’ latest creation…

“It’s got augmented reality built into it, so when you scan a QR Code it all comes to life, so there’s a halo that spins around on his head, and other stuff. It’s pretty cool,” says Marc.

Robbie became LFC’s seventh highest goal scorer of all time, chalking up a massive 183 goals in two separate periods at the club, between 1993 and 2002, and 2005-2007.

The 48-year-old played 369 games for the Reds and played for other clubs including Leeds United and Manchester City before later going along the managerial route and taking on successful roles as TV pundit and commentator.

Marc added:

“The fans just love him, he’s a legend, and the nickname of God probably tells you all you need to know.”

He says the footballer is delighted with the special tribute: “Seeing Robbie’s reaction was when I kind of knew I was happy with it, although I could see the reaction of people walking past and I’ve seen the reaction on social media and how it’s blown up.

“But Robbie messaged me a couple of nights ago and said ‘I know we wanted to keep it a secret but everyone’s sending me pictures of it and I’m absolutely blown away by it, and I think it’s incredible’.

“So I knew he was going to love it and when you see it in person as opposed to pictures, it takes it to another level.

“I’m really happy with it and really proud of it.”

Robbie joins other Liverpool heroes who have been immortalised by MurWalls – who recently revealed an amazing portrait of boxer Natasha Jonas with her title belts on Elwy Street off High Park Street, near to her childhood home – including Jurgen Klopp, Jordan Henderson, Steven Gerrard, and John Barnes, Ray Clemence, and others.

Marc said:

“Every time another one pops up it makes people more aware of how street art can change people’s lives, it can be the difference between being in a good mood and a bad mood one day.

“The street art culture has grown so much over the years and it’s incredible to be doing these large-scale canvasses, but when you bring it into the world of football where people are so passionate about their teams and their favourite players, and you bring the two together, it’s just such an incredible feeling for the fans to be able to celebrate them.

“The way I see it is that this is the 21st century statue.”
