Merseyrail unveils artwork by Bellerive students at St Michaels Station

Students from Bellerive FCJ Catholic College and Upton Hall FCJ have left their mark on St Michaels station with a special mosaic that highlights places of peace and contemplation across the Liverpool City Region and beyond.

The impressive artwork, now on display at the Merseyrail station, was a collaborative effort involving pupils from various years at the two schools.

It highlights iconic locations such as Formby Pinewoods, Another Place at Crosby, the Sefton Palm House, and even the Moel Famau mountain peak.

Initiated by the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority (LCRCA), Merseyrail, and Women in Community Rail, the project aimed to enhance the station environment while fostering inclusivity and diversity in the rail industry.

Sally Ralston BEM, Community Involvement Manager at Merseyrail, said:

“We’re delighted with the fantastic artwork that the students of Bellerive FCJ and Upton Hall FCJ Schools have produced. It’s so important to be able to showcase our stations that inspire and please our customers.

“The mosaic shows real pride in the Liverpool City Region, and I hope customers enjoy the work for many years to come. I know the pupils put in many hours of hard work, and on behalf of Merseyrail I would like to thank them for their efforts.”

Shelagh McNicholas, teacher of Art and Design Technology at Bellerive FCJ, added:

“It has been an absolute pleasure to work with the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority and Merseyrail on creating this collaborative paper mosaic with our friends at Upton Hall FCJ. 

“Together the students have focused on places of peace and contemplation where they can just be. We are mindful of how busy and hectic life can be and we hope that the artwork will inspire train travellers to hop on the train and take themselves to the places highlighted on the mosaic. 

“We are very proud to have the work on display at St Michaels station and delighted to bringing artwork into the community for all to see.”

The mosaic, which remains on display at the schools in its original form, has been faithfully reproduced at St Michaels station, adorning a platform wall and adding a touch of tranquility to the daily commute for passengers.

With its depiction of serene locales and thoughtful craftsmanship, the mosaic serves as a reminder of the beauty and serenity found within the Liverpool City Region, inviting commuters to pause and appreciate the peaceful moments amid their busy schedules.
