What’s to come during the rest of summer at Liverpool’s theatres

Summer’s here and there’s still loads going on in Liverpool’s theatreland from family fun to fascinating factual shows and everything in between.

So whether you love a good musical or you want to find out more about life for some of the city’s incredible people, here are some of the highlights you won’t want to miss.

Royal Court – Sisters of Mersey

Lindzi Germain, Keddy Sutton and Emma Bispham star in this new 80s-set knockabout comedy from Jonathan Harvey about two Sisters who’ve grown up in St Elmo’s Convent in Dingle as identical twins – until Monsignor Michael has some shocking news … they’re not twins at all! The Sisters decide to change the habit of a lifetime and escape from the convent to find out more about their real families and get locked in a battle with a wicked gangster, trapped in an improbable heist, and trying to pinch a nude statue to fill a gaping hole in the Monsignor’s apse! Classic comedy with some great 80s’ tunes, it’s on now until Saturday, August 3.

Everyman Theatre – In Conversation with Michael Mansfield KC

In Converstation with Micheal Mansfield

This is a great chance to meet the incredible barrister, Michael Mansfield, KC, who’s spent his career fighting injustice, persecution and corruption, from the Birmingham Six, Bloody Sunday, Stephen Lawrence, the Marchioness, Glenfell and, of course, Hillsborough – and he says he’s come to learn one thing, that people power is unstoppable.  Michael Mansfield has a long association with Liverpool, working with the Hillsborough Families in their fight for justice from 2008 and he returns to the city and to the Everyman, where he was once a Trustee, for a signing event for his new book, The Power in the People: Not the People in Power. That’s on this Saturday, July 20, 3.30pm

Don’t forget to take the tissues for this one, based on the award-winning 80s movie starring Richard Gere and Debra Winger. A story of love, courage, and redemption, it follows the story of Zack Mayo, a fearless young officer candidate, and his love affair with the fiery Paula Pokrifki. Cue unforgettable songs like Love Lifts Us (Up Where We Belong), Cyndi Lauper’s Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, and Madonna’s Material Girl, and an emotional rollercoaster that’ll have you sobbing in your seats. It’s on from Monday, July 22 to Saturday, July 27.

Empire Theatre – Hairspray The Musical

Oh we don’t half love a good musical and this has to be one of the best when it comes to toe-tapping, singalong songs that we all know and love. The Full Monty and Corrie actor Neil Hurst stars as Edna Turnblad, mother of Tracy Turnblad who, with friends Seaweed, his sister Little Inez, heartthrob Link Larkin, and Motormouth Maybelle, set about trying to change the world. Still packing a punch with its message of tolerance and the fight against racial discrimination, it’s got great showstopping tracks like You Can’t Stop The Beat, Good Morning Baltimore, Welcome to the 60s, and so many more. It’s on from Monday August 19 to Saturday, August 24.

Shakespeare North Playhouse – Jon Culshaw in Conversation with Lady Ann Dodd

This is a rare chance to find out more about the life of impressionist Jon Culshaw and the Mersey comic legend that was Ken Dodd Esq, through this unique conversation between Jon and the late Squire of Knotty Ash’s wife Lady Ann. We’re bound to see and hear some famous faces from the inimitable Mr Culshaw and hear some hilarious backstage stories about Sir Ken.  Tattifilarious stuff! It’s on in Shakespeare North’s Cockpit Theatre on Saturday, August 10 with tickets from £10 and you can pay what you decide.

The UK’s favourite science team is back and more explosive than ever, as the presenters dive deep into the world of science and look at how science shapes the modern world we live in (with a few loud bangs along the way)! This is a great one for families as it’s 100% educational, 200% entertaining, 300% explosive, and 400% fun. One that’ll guarantee a great weekend, it’s on on Sunday, July 28.

Floral Pavilion New Brighton – The Tiger Who Came to Tea (and all that jazz!)

Judith Kerr’s classic tale comes to life at the Floral Pavilion from Monday, August 19 to Wednesday, August 21, when you can see Sophie and her mummy central to singalong songs and clumsy chaos when they answer the door to a big, stripy tiger! And the family fun sits alongside Jazz on a Summer’s Day on Saturday, July 27, with bands AND a BBQ on the terrace at the Pavilion.
