New York-inspired sandwich bar Derek’s opens in Liverpool City Centre
2 hours ago
The sandwich scene in Liverpool just got a whole lot tastier, as Derek’s Coffee and Sandwiches, a New York-inspired sandwich bar, has officially opened its doors in Liverpool City Centre.
Derek’s has announced the opening of its third venue on Berry Street in Liverpool.
Already loved by locals in Allerton and Crosby, Derek’s is known for its hearty, packed-to-the-brim sandwiches, a huge departure from traditional British “cucumber butties”.
Derek’s journey began in 2021 when co-founder Ethan, inspired by a trip to New York, set out to bring a slice of the Big Apple back home.
In a recent Instagram post, Ethan reminisced about the inspiration behind the business. He shared how visiting a friend in New York opened his eyes to the dedication Americans put into sandwiches – so much so that upon returning, he realised Liverpool lacked a “real sandwich packed with proper ingredients.”
Determined to make this vision a reality, Ethan convinced friend, and now co-owner, Adam not to move to Canada.
With their savings and a little help from friends and family, they were able to transform their vision into a reality.
They painted walls, swapped favours with tradesmen, and even shouted “orders” to an imaginary Italian chef in the back to keep the atmosphere buzzing.
When they opened their first location, they anticipated around 30 customers on opening day. But by 11.00am over a hundred people had turned up, queueing down the road to support the new sandwich shop.
Since those early days, the sandwich shop has gained a loyal following for their overstuffed hoagies, Italian-inspired subs, and signature pickles, even expanding to a team of over 25 people who share their passion for great sandwiches.
From the sold-out hoagies to the queues of customers eager to get their hands on the latest sub, Derek’s has brought an authentic, American sandwich experience to Liverpool.
Derek’s Coffee and Sandwiches’ new Liverpool City Centre location is now open, ready to serve up the bold flavours and NYC-inspired creations that have already captured the hearts (and stomachs) of Liverpool.
For those craving a true New York-style sandwich experience, this spot is a must-visit.
