Liverpool to ‘glow green’ for Clatterbridge Cancer Charity’s Night Walk

A dad from Warrington is urging people to join him in honouring loved ones and raising funds for Clatterbridge Cancer Charity at the Glow Green Night Walk in Liverpool on Wednesday, 7 February.

Russ Scanlon, a father of two, lost his wife Debs to terminal bowel cancer in December 2021. Diagnosed in May 2020 after an unrelated health scan, Debs was just 48 when she passed away in 2021.

Now, Russ is dedicated to giving back to the staff at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre who cared for Debs during her battle with cancer.

He and his loved ones also want to help other patients and families going through the treatment experience.

He will be taking part in Clatterbridge Cancer Charity’s Glow Green night walk on 7 February and said: “Clatterbridge was fantastic with their care and treatment, and we want to do anything we can to help other families like us.

“Glow Green is a brilliant event and as well as being great fun and bringing people together it is also a good way to help raise vital funds for the charity and we are very happy to be part of that effort.”

Russ has taken part in Glow Green every year since it started in 2022 and so far has raised more than £35,000, along with his friends and family, for Clatterbridge Cancer Charity. 

He will once more don his green Hulk outfit for this year’s event and join more than 1500 other people for the 8km walk around Liverpool city centre where civic buildings will be lit green for the night.

It is a fitting tribute to Debs. The couple were devoted parents to two children, aged eight and six at the time, lovingly known as Princess and Bear. Debs was a deeply loved friend and family member to many who want to keep her memory alive and cherished.

Russ said: “Debs was one of the most caring people in the world. She would do anything for anyone, was so loving and we called her our wonder woman.”

Before she passed, she committed to participating in the Glow Green Night Walk to raise funds for Clatterbridge Cancer Charity. Debs was also moved by the support she and the family received from Clatterbridge during her treatment.

She had sent a message to all her friends and family she planned to join on the walk, saying: “I really don’t know where to start in saying the biggest thank you to every single one of you. I am completely overwhelmed and emotional with all the support.

“Clatterbridge have been fantastic with their care and treatment, and I know that every penny that’s raised will carry on the amazing work they do.”

The event, sponsored by Arriva, starts at the Museum of Liverpool on the waterfront with a fun show from 6.30pm. Walkers can enjoy free travel with Arriva to and from the city centre via a day pass included in the entry pack.

The route takes walkers past some of Liverpool’s most famous landmarks like The Royal Albert Dock, Liverpool One, both cathedrals, the historic sites of Hope Street and of course our state-of-the-art cancer centre.

There is a moment to pause and reflect in front of the Metropolitan Cathedral where hundreds of lanterns are dedicated to loved ones.

Clatterbridge Cancer Charity raises funds to support research into new treatments and to help patient care at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centres in Liverpool, Wirral and Aintree and at a network of treatment clinics across Cheshire and Merseyside.
