Liverpool City Council to install 300 new electric vehicle charging points across the city
1 hour ago

Liverpool City Council has partnered with char.gy, a leading EV charging provider, to install 300 new on-street electric vehicle (EV) charge points across the city.
The initiative is focused on residential streets without off-street parking, making EV ownership more accessible to a wider range of residents.
With these new additions, Liverpool’s EV charging network will expand to 670 charge points, reinforcing the city’s commitment to sustainable transport. The rollout aligns with Liverpool’s 2030 Net Zero Action Plan, which aims to reduce carbon emissions and promote greener travel options, including cycling, walking, and electric mobility.
On-street charging is particularly important for the 40% of UK households that lack access to private driveways or garages. By integrating charge points directly into existing street lampposts, Liverpool is ensuring that drivers can conveniently and affordably charge their EVs near their homes.
The new char.gy charge points, which will be installed directly into existing street lampposts, charge at a speed of up to 5kW and take just under two hours to install. They will all be powered by 100% renewable energy, backed by Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGOs).
The locations for the new chargers have been carefully selected based on resident requests, ensuring the infrastructure meets the needs of those who do not have off-street parking options. The rollout will cover both residential and commercial areas, making it easier for EV and hybrid vehicle owners to charge their cars while at home or work.
Liverpool declared a climate emergency in 2019, leading to the development of the Net Zero Liverpool Action Plan. As part of this initiative, reducing carbon emissions from transport has been a key priority. The expansion of EV charging infrastructure is a crucial step toward achieving the city’s ambitious net-zero target by 2030, encouraging more residents to make the switch to electric vehicles.
By investing in a reliable, sustainable, and widespread EV charging network, Liverpool is taking significant strides toward a cleaner, greener future, ensuring that EV charging is accessible to all residents, regardless of their living situation.
Cllr Dan Barrington, Liverpool City Council Cabinet Member for Transport and Connectivity, said:
“I’m delighted that we are providing even more on-street car charging for residents. This is a crucial hurdle to overcome in ensuring a just transition from fossil fuels to a net zero city.
“Not everyone has a private drive where they can install their own charging point. So, this increase in on-street chargers is a hugely significant infrastructure upgrade that will support the switch to EVs.”
John Lewis, CEO OF char.gy, said:
“We’re excited to partner with Liverpool City Council to make EV charging more accessible, especially for residents without off-street parking. Switching to an electric vehicle should be easy for everyone, no m atter where they live.
“By installing charge points along residential streets, char.gy brings convenient, reliable, and affordable charging right to drivers’ doorsteps. Residents can easily charge overnight from home and take advantage of our discounted Night Tariff during off-peak hours when electricity rates are lower – just like homeowners with driveways do. By bridging this ‘driveway divide,’ we’re making EV ownership a realistic option for more people.
“We look forward to working with Liverpool City Council as they continue their journey toward a cleaner, greener Liverpool and help make sustainable transport a reality for even more residents.”
