Liverpool City Region receives £25 million to bolster its world-class creative industries

Liverpool City Region has secured £25 million to boost its already thriving creative industries, after being named one of six UK regions to benefit from the Government’s Creative Places Growth Fund.

The investment will support sectors including film and TV, music and gaming, helping businesses innovate, develop skills and attract private backing.

The region is already home to more than 50 gaming companies – including Sony and PlayStation – and is the most filmed location in the UK outside London, with projects like the LCR Production Fund and the planned Littlewoods Film and TV Studios driving growth.

The £25 million will be distributed over three years from 2026 and will be managed locally by the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority. Funding will go towards tailored support for creative professionals, skills programmes, business development, investment partnerships and industry-specific initiatives.

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said the programme recognises the strength of regional talent:

“Creativity has no postcode – whether it’s a musician in Liverpool, a filmmaker in Birkenhead, or a video games developer in St Helens. We’re committed to growing our creative industries in every corner of the nation, and devolving this funding means regions can focus on what they need to thrive.”

The Creative Places Growth Fund was first announced in June as part of the Government’s wider Creative Industries Sector Plan. A total of £150 million will be invested across six areas with strong cultural and creative potential: Liverpool City Region, Greater Manchester, the North East, West Midlands, West of England and West Yorkshire.

Mayor Steve Rotheram welcomed the announcement, calling it a major step for the region’s creative economy:

“From music and TV to gaming and film, the Liverpool City Region has creativity running through its veins. Our world-famous culture is recognised across the globe, and we’re already home to talented people and pioneering businesses. This funding will help us go even further – creating jobs, attracting investment and giving local people the chance to showcase their skills on a global stage.

“This is a region where creativity and culture don’t just entertain, they power our economy, and this investment will make sure that continues for generations to come.”
