Police urge public not to spread rumours after hoax bomb threats reported at Merseyside schools
2 hours ago
Merseyside Police are urging the public not to share rumours or misinformation after a number of malicious communications were reported at several schools across the region today (Monday 9 March).
Officers say the reports are believed to be hoax threats, and enquiries are ongoing to identify those responsible.
Police have confirmed that no schools have been asked to close and there is no wider risk believed to be posed to school staff, pupils or the public.
However, officers say false information circulating on WhatsApp groups and social media is causing unnecessary concern among parents and carers.
Detective Inspector John Black said: “We understand that parents and carers will have concerns but we are linked in with all schools affected and providing advice and reassurance as enquiries continue.
“Based on the information we have received and assessed, there has been no requirements for any school to close.
“This matter is being treated as a hoax, but we are aware of rumours circulating on social media which are creating additional concerns for parents and guardians.
“At this stage no arrests have been made but we will issue appropriate updates when available and continue to liaise with those schools affected.”
Merseyside Police are reminding the public not to share unverified messages or screenshots online, warning that spreading misinformation can have real-world consequences for schools, families and emergency services.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Merseyside Police on 101 or message @MerpolCC on social media.
