Chinatown playground set for major upgrade with new inclusive play equipment

Families in Liverpool’s Chinatown will soon have a refreshed place to play as work begins on a major upgrade to the playground at Great George Square.

Liverpool City Council is working with playground specialist Wicksteed to install a brand new play area, which has been designed in collaboration with local families.

The new playground will feature a zodiac-inspired theme and include equipment suitable for children aged between four and 12.

A range of inclusive play features will also be installed, including sensory play panels, swings and a wheelchair-accessible roundabout to ensure the space can be enjoyed by as many children as possible.

Dual-language panels will appear throughout the playground, featuring phrases in Chinese as well as British Sign Language.

The design is also inspired by the concept of Anji Play, which encourages children to lead their own play experiences and choose their own level of challenge when using the equipment.

Work on the new playground is expected to take around a month to complete and forms part of wider improvements around Great George Street.

As part of the project, a ceremonial memorial garden will also be created to honour the history of Liverpool’s Chinese community. Two traditional guardian lion statues, donated by the Chinese Consulate General in Manchester, will be installed later this year to celebrate the sister-city relationship between Liverpool and Shanghai.

Elsewhere in Chinatown, the council is also working with Global Street Art on a new mural as part of a wider public realm improvement project.

The playground upgrade is part of a wider programme to improve play spaces across the city, with several sites already refurbished and more improvements planned in parks including Everton Park.
