A new fundraising scheme has been launched to help support the upkeep of one of the UK’s most iconic buildings, Liverpool Cathedral.

The initiative, called the Scott Circle, invites supporters to contribute towards maintaining the country’s largest cathedral, helping fund essential repairs, restoration work and day-to-day maintenance.

Named after the building’s architect, Giles Gilbert Scott, the scheme honours the man behind the landmark cathedral which has become a defining feature of Liverpool’s skyline.

Scott, who is also known for designing the iconic K2 Red Telephone Box and Battersea Power Station, was just 22 years old when he was chosen to design Liverpool Cathedral, despite having no completed buildings to his name at the time.

Through the Scott Circle, members can support the cathedral’s annual programme of repairs and conservation work, which costs more than £1 million each year.

Membership offers a number of benefits, including invitations to special events, behind-the-scenes tours, updates on restoration projects and opportunities to meet members of the cathedral team.

Donation tiers are inspired by materials used in the building itself, including Sandstone, Oak and Marble, with monthly contributions starting from £5.

The Very Revd Dr Sue Jones said public support is vital to maintaining the cathedral, which receives no government funding.

She said the Scott Circle gives people who feel a connection to the cathedral the opportunity to play a part in protecting the building for future generations.

Acting Director of Fundraising Katie Dyer added that the cathedral was originally built thanks to the generosity of ordinary people, and the new scheme continues that legacy by helping ensure the building remains open and safe for visitors.

People interested in joining the Scott Circle can find out more via the Liverpool Cathedral website.
