Mo Salah: Farewell to a Liverpool legend
As beloved Liverpool winger Mo Salah prepares to say goodbye, we revisit the story that defined his time at the club.
Many people scoffed when Liverpool Football Club made Mohamed Salah their club-record signing in June 2017.
“£37 million for a Chelsea reject?” they said. “He’s not good enough for the Premier League.”
Then the goals came. His debut strike against Watford – a two-yard tap-in – was the start of something extraordinary. The electrifying Egyptian plundered a further 42 goals in a spectacular debut season – breaking the record for most goals in a 38-game Premier League season (32) and registering 16 assists across all competitions.
His spectacular contribution saw Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side reach the Champions League Final in Kyiv. But Mo’s stellar first campaign would end in heartbreak, with the forward injuring his shoulder in the 30th minute following a cynical challenge from Sergio Ramos.
Liverpool would eventually lose 3-1. Despite the disappointment, there was no question that the Kop had a new hero.

“Mo Salah, Mo Salah, running down the wing. Salah-la-la-la-la – the Egyptian King.”
Still, the sceptics came.
“He’s a one-season wonder,” they said. “It’ll never last.”
The ‘Ode to Mo’ mural in Liverpool city centre promised to prove them wrong. Again.
Soon his name was everywhere – on bedroom walls and on shirts worn by millions worldwide.
On 26 April 2019, Salah made his 100th appearance for Liverpool, scoring twice in a 5–0 win over Huddersfield Town to take his tally to 69 goals – the most ever by a Liverpool player in their first century of games.
He ended the season with 27 goals, including the first in the 2019 Champions League Final against Tottenham. Liverpool’s 2-0 victory saw them become European Champions for the sixth time.
The doubters? Silenced. Not that Mo Salah cared. He was just getting started.
In December, The Reds won the 2019 FIFA Club World Cup. Liverpool’s number 11 received the Golden Ball award for Player of the Tournament.
By June 2020, Salah’s 17 league goals had helped Liverpool secure a long-awaited 19th English League title in a remarkable season that saw the team reach 99 points in a Covid-19-interrupted calendar.
The records kept rolling in. So did the trophies.
On 17 October 2020, Salah scored his 100th goal for Liverpool in a 2–2 draw away to local rivals Everton.
In the 2021–2022 season, Salah continued his dazzling form, winning his third Premier League Golden Boot and the Playmaker of the Season.
His 31 strikes in all competitions almost drove Liverpool to an unprecedented quadruple, with The Reds winning the League Cup and the FA Cup but finishing second in both the Premier League and Champions League.
His magical, mazy solo effort against Manchester City won Premier League Goal of the Season.
On 1 July 2022, after much speculation, Salah signed a new contract with his beloved Liverpool. He was already smashing records on the first game of the season – his goal against Fulham making him the first player to score on the opening day six seasons in a row.
In October, Salah came off the bench against Rangers to score three goals in just over six minutes – the fastest Champions League hat-trick of all time.
Then, on 5 March 2023, Mo scored twice – and delivered two assists – in an iconic 7-0 win against Manchester United, becoming Liverpool’s top scorer in the Premier League with 129 goals.
In the following 2023–2024 season, Salah scored his 200th goal for Liverpool in a 2–1 win away to Crystal Palace in the Premier League, becoming only the fifth player at the club to reach the landmark.
He closed out 2023-2024 as the most-used player in Jurgen Klopp’s tenure, winning the League Cup and being named Liverpool’s Player of the Season for the fourth time.
Yet Mo’s best was still to come.
In the 2024–2025 campaign, Liverpool stormed to the Premier League title for a record 20th time under new boss Arne Slot. Mo’s impact was inevitable.

Premier League Player of the Season. The Golden Boot for most goals (29). Playmaker award for most assists (18). And the first player in league history to win all three in a single season.
To be fair, the sceptics made one solid point: all good things come to an end.
On 24 March 2026, Mohamed Salah Hamed Mahrous Ghaly announced that he would depart Liverpool Football Club at the end of the season.
By that point, his 255 goals put him third on Liverpool’s all-time goalscorers list.
He may not have matched his own superlative standards so far this campaign. And there was the early-season strop when he accused the club of ‘throwing him under the bus’ for the team’s faltering form. But Mo’s trademark left-footed strike against Galatasaray in March reminded us of his undeniable genius.
And with the FA Cup and Champions League titles still to play for, who’d bet against the Egyptian King inspiring The Reds to further glory?
Whatever happens next, Salah leaves Liverpool as a club legend, a global icon – and one of the finest players the Premier League has seen.
