Liverpool gets ready for Tour de France with major charity bike ride
1 hour ago
Liverpool is getting into the cycling spirit ahead of the Tour de France arriving in the city next year, with a major charity bike ride set to take place this September.
Paralympic champion Lora Fachie and TV presenter and actor Simon O’Brien are backing the University Hospitals of Liverpool Charity cycling event, encouraging riders of all abilities to get involved.
Taking place on 14 September, the event, called Le Tour Merseyside, will raise money to support patients, families and staff at the Major Trauma Centre at Aintree University Hospital.
Cyclists will be able to choose from three different routes of 33, 55 or 77 miles, taking in parts of the proposed Tour de France stage route through Merseyside and Lancashire countryside.
Seven time Paralympic medallist Lora Fachie said cycling offers huge benefits for both physical and mental wellbeing.
She said: “Nothing beats the feeling of being on a bike, plus it’s great for your physical and mental health. You get a real sense of achievement and events like Bike Aintree are a great incentive to get on two wheels and give something back.
“Training for a race is great in the sunshine but not so easy in poor weather but knowing you are raising money for the trauma centre is a great motivator.”
Simon O’Brien, who is also Liverpool City Region’s cycling and walking commissioner, said the event is expected to be even bigger this year.
He said: “What an amazing experience to start a race at Aintree Racecourse. The day was brilliant, lots of fun for participants and spectators alike.
“We’ve already had plenty of interest this year so it will be a bigger and better celebration of community, wellbeing and inclusive cycling.”
Dr Simon Scott, Clinical Director at Aintree University Hospital’s Major Trauma Centre, said the fundraiser would make a real difference for staff, patients and families.
He said: “Liverpool looks after its own and this is another example of the power of community. The Aintree Major Trauma Centre is one of the busiest in the region, caring for thousands of people each year in the most critical circumstances.”
The event will also feature a free family fun day at Aintree Racecourse, with activities focused on mental health, wellbeing and encouraging active lifestyles.
There is no minimum sponsorship requirement and riders can choose from a range of fundraising options.
