Students at St John Bosco Arts College in Croxteth have raised £3,000 for local, national and international charities during the 2025 and 2026 school year through fundraising events, donation drives and awareness campaigns.
Each year group chose a charity to support, while pupils and staff also came together to back a number of causes across Liverpool and beyond.
Among the whole school fundraising activities were a Macmillan Coffee Morning, which raised £365, a harvest collection that generated more than 150 food and toiletry donations for Norris Green North Liverpool Foodbank, support for Nugent’s Toy Appeal and the school’s annual Christmas fayre. The festive event raised £654 for Mary’s Meals, VIDES UK and Woodlands Hospice.
Students also marked awareness campaigns including Children’s Mental Health Week and World Down Syndrome Day with bake sales and ribbon fundraising, raising a combined £979 for Hello Yellow, YoungMinds and Down Syndrome UK.
Headteacher Darren Gidman said: “I am extremely proud of our school community and all it has achieved over the past year to raise awareness and funds for such important causes.
“At St John Bosco Arts College, we believe in nurturing not only bright minds, but also kind and compassionate hearts. It has been fantastic to witness students’ empathy, sense of social responsibility and Catholic values in action throughout the year.
“Alongside raising an incredible amount of money and collecting vital donations for charities, these activities have helped students further develop their teamwork, leadership and organisational skills. As we reflect on everything that has been achieved this year and look ahead to the future, I am excited to see what next year’s fundraising events will accomplish.”
Year 7 pupils chose to support Zoe’s Place, raising money through sponsored walks, bake sales and tutor group collections to help the Liverpool charity, which provides specialist care for babies and children with life limiting and life threatening conditions.
Year 8 selected CAFOD as its chosen charity and raised £364 through collections after school productions and services, including Advent and Lent. Students also completed a sponsored water walk during PE lessons, carrying buckets of water to experience some of the challenges faced by communities without easy access to clean water.
After hearing from one of the charity’s outreach team during an assembly, Year 9 chose to support Mary’s Meals. The group raised £473 by selling handmade gifts at the Christmas fayre and organising a bake sale.
Year 10 students also created handmade gifts and treats for the Christmas fayre, raising £160 for VIDES UK through their enterprise activities.
Year 11 organised the school’s harvest foodbank collection for Norris Green North Liverpool Foodbank, while sixth form students collected essential hygiene products for women to mark International Women’s Day.
The sixth form also raised £151 for Woodlands Hospice by selling the charity’s merchandise during the Christmas fayre.
Alongside the year group fundraising, students also supported causes that were personally important to them. One Year 11 student, raised more than £300 towards attending the 26th World Scout Jamboree in Poland by organising two cake sales. Meanwhile, a Year 8 student donated 29 inches of hair to The Little Princess Trust after having her first haircut.
The fundraising programme is part of St John Bosco Arts College’s ongoing commitment to supporting others and encouraging students to make a positive difference in their local community and beyond.
