Liverpool Coffee Festival is back this weekend, Saturday and Sunday June 6-7, with more than 300 different coffees to try, 50 traders – and an espresso martini bar.

The festival is now in its third year and it keeps on growing, showcasing a huge variety of different coffees from around the world, as well as related independent businesses such as food and drink, pastries and bakes, and handmade ceramics.

That includes Lark Lane and Baltic favourites Press Bros who’ll be mixing their espresso martini menu, and teaming up with two of the city’s other much-loved roasters – Crosby Coffee and Two Words – to create a limited-edition collaboration coffee.

There’ll be a Roasters Village where people can discover some of the country’s top coffee roasters. And anyone who wants to find out more about what goes into making the perfect cup can head to a Tasting Lab where producers will be happy to talk more about their flavours, origins and processes.

The two-day festival, at Black Lodge Brewery on Kings Dock Street in the Baltic Triangle, will also feature a craft market with local artisans, talks, masterclasses and tasting sessions, plus DJs to bring a proper day festival feel.

Liverpool Coffee festival founder Pedro Hunter, who owns neighbouring Botanical Garden, Sub Rosa and the newly opened Ffrens, says it brings together something for anyone who loves coffee, whether they’re a devoted connoisseur or just a casual fan.

He explains:

“Liverpool’s just really embraced coffee and coffee culture, and we’ve seen an influx of brands wanting to be here so it’s lovely that the city is now seen on the same level as other places in terms of coffee.

“When we started the festival, we based it on one in London but other ones around the country were failing and going out of business.

“I think the reason we’ve succeeded is we thought, what would we like to experience ourselves? We looked at it from both sides, as an exhibitor and as someone coming to the festival.

“We’ve got a really good mix of education and celebration, and alongside that we also want a good wholesome fun family day out for anyone who just maybe wants to dip their toe in and have a try.

“It’s not all got to be super-serious, or super-jovial, so I think we’ve got a nice balance.”

Ped says it’s a chance for people to try lots of different roasts and not only discover their preference but find out why.

He added:

“You don’t have to drink whole coffees, there are lots of smaller samples so you can try, different countries of origin, different production methods, and use the day as a bit of a honing opportunity to figure out what you really like from coffee.

“It’s similar to going to a wine tasting, because one of the best parts is having a series of products in front of you that you can compare.

“Maybe one has notes of caramel and dark chocolate, and another is watermelon and pink strawberry, and when you taste them you get that.

“Exhibitors who come really care about and love coffee so it’s amazing for them to be able to chat to the people who are drinking their coffee.

“They can say ‘I made the flavour profile on this, what do you think about it?’ or ‘let me tell you what I did and how I did it’.

“Liverpool Coffee Festival is about being able to do that in a really nice casual setting, with a full day of entertainment, food and drink with your friends.”
