The legendary Paul Weller took to the stage at On the Waterfront last night to play a two and a half hour set for his fans in Liverpool.

The Jam and The Style Council star Weller played hits such as ‘Shout to the Top’, ‘That’s Entertainment’ and ‘Town Called Malice’ for a crowd at the city’s Pier Head. On The Waterfront will continue this weekend, with Red Rum Club, Cream Classical and Snow Patrol confirmed for Friday, Saturday and Sunday respectively.

On the Waterfront quite literally couldn’t take place in a better venue, with Weller himself in disbelief at the sheer beauty of the views that grace Liverpool’s waterfront. Doors opened at 5pm, which gave festival-goers enough time to find their favourite space in the wide open arena, which was packed with food and drinks vendors. Beach style lounge seats were available on the grass for fans who arrived early enough to secure them, while some fans chose to make use of the steps heading up to the Museum of Liverpool to get a better view of the action.

The early doors time gave fans a chance to get as close to the action as possible, with some people rushing towards the stage to get as close to the barrier separating them from Weller as possible. The first support act, rising band Arkayla from Manchester, took to the stage just before 6pm to perform tunes such as ‘Run Kid’, ‘Doctor’ and ‘Fortune Teller’ for an enthusiastic crowd that was dotted with Arkayla followers wearing the band’s merchandise.

Birkenhead born Miles Kane was next up, stating his delight at “being back home” in front of a Merseyside crowd. Kane, formerly of Indie sensations The Last Shadow Puppets, performed hits such as ‘Don’t Forget Who You Are’ and ‘Rearrange’ before playing more recent songs from his albums ‘Coup De Grace’ and ‘Sunlight in the Shadows’.

Weller emerged at around 8:30pm, and played songs from the last four decades for his adoring crowd. The Modfather’s scouse supporters ensured not a square metre of space was available from the stage to the Cunard Building. Fans enjoyed themselves, taking pictures with the Beatles statue that sat in the middle of the crowd, before Weller wished a Happy Birthday to the actual Paul McCartney, who celebrated his 84th birthday on Thursday.

On the Waterfront, yet again, is one of the standout summer events in the North West. The disbelief as you turn your head from the famous Liver Building to face the biggest artists in the UK just never gets old. This event is an absolute must visit for anyone interested in visiting the most breathtaking music venues in the world. The event has a festival feel that evolves into a proper concert vibe as the sun goes down, and the way they manage to fit so much into Liverpool’s famous Pier Head is like an optical illusion that must be seen to be believed.
