Liverpool Cathedral to host spectacular performance of Handel’s Messiah this October

Liverpool Cathedral is set to host a performance of Handel’s Messiah, on Saturday 3rd October.

One of history’s most loved oratorios, Messiah tells the story of the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Christ. First performed in Dublin in 1742, and later for King George II in London, this timeless masterpiece has endured through the ages and continues to captivate audiences across the globe.

This performance continues the legacy of what has become the ‘Two Cathedrals Messiah’, where the choirs of both Liverpool Cathedral and the Metropolitan Cathedral Choir come together to perform with the Liverpool Mozart Orchestra, organist Ian Wells and a line-up of soloists which includes Barbara Ruzsics, Danielle Thomas, and Damian O’Keeffe.

With its grand, rich storytelling and thrilling choruses which include the famous ‘Hallelujah Chorus’ – during which audiences traditionally stand, a custom often attributed to the belief that King George II did so at the London premiere – Handel’s Messiah offers an unforgettable experience of classical music whether it be for the seasoned enthusiast or someone experiencing it for the first time.

Set against the awe-inspiring backdrop of Liverpool Cathedral, don’t miss your chance to experience the timeless beauty of Handel’s Messiah. Secure your tickets today and join us for an unforgettable evening of classical music.

The Very Revd Dr Sue Jones, Dean of Liverpool, said:

“Handel’s Messiah, which alternates annually between ourselves at Liverpool Cathedral and the Metropolitan Cathedral, is one of the true masterpieces in the choral repertoire. I am pleased to welcome all who will visit the Cathedral for what promises to be a magnificent performance.”

Stephen Mannings, Director of Music at Liverpool Cathedral, said:

“As part of a rich cultural heritage in which our two great cathedrals collaborate annually to perform Handel’s Messiah, this year the oratorio takes place at Liverpool Cathedral on Saturday 3rd October. The performance will feature the choirs of Liverpool Cathedral and Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral, be accompanied by the Liverpool Mozart Orchestra and organist Ian Wells, and be conducted by Stephen Mannings.”
