Eurovision star Sam Ryder is set to take on one of musical theatre’s most iconic roles when Jesus Christ Superstar arrives at Liverpool Empire Theatre as part of a major new UK tour.
The hit rock musical, created by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, will run in Liverpool from Tuesday 21 September to Saturday 2 October 2027, with tickets going on sale at 10am on Wednesday 24 June.
Fresh from acclaimed West End runs at The London Palladium and Theatre Royal Drury Lane, the production will head out on a nationwide tour, giving audiences across the UK the chance to experience the award winning show.
Sam Ryder will play Jesus, bringing his acclaimed interpretation of the role to theatres around the country for the first time. Full casting for the production is expected to be announced at a later date.

Producer Michael Harrison said: “We are absolutely delighted that Jesus Christ Superstar will embark on a major UK tour following the phenomenal response to this extraordinary new production.
“The tremendous buzz generated by Saturday night’s first performance at The London Palladium underlines just how special this iconic musical remains, and we are thrilled that audiences across the country will now have the opportunity to experience Tim Sheader’s visionary staging, Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s legendary score, and Sam Ryder’s electrifying performance.”
Directed by Tim Sheader, the production reunites the creative team behind the Olivier Award winning 2016 Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre revival. Choreography comes from Drew McOnie, with design by Tony and Olivier Award winner Tom Scutt.

Jesus Christ Superstar tells the story of the final days of Jesus Christ through the eyes of Judas and features some of musical theatre’s most recognisable songs, including I Don’t Know How to Love Him, Gethsemane and Superstar.
Since first opening on Broadway in 1971, the musical has become a global phenomenon. The original London production ran for more than eight years and was, at the time, the longest running musical in West End history.
Liverpool audiences will have the chance to see the latest production when it arrives at the Empire Theatre for a limited two week run in September and October 2027.
Tickets go on sale at 10am on Wednesday 24 June.
