A brand new landmark has arrived in Southport’s Kings Gardens as Masters Putting Course unveils a striking new mascot sculpture in honour of its founder, George Law, ahead of The Open returning to the town this summer.

The eye catching steel mascot now sits proudly on top of the Masters Putting Course building, overlooking the Promenade and Marine Lake, making it impossible to miss for visitors heading to Southport during The 154th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale this July.

Known to generations of visitors as Southport Crazy Golf, Masters Putting Course was founded by Scottish golfer George Law in 1965 and has been entertaining families, holidaymakers and golf fans ever since. Following its 60th anniversary celebrations last year, the Law family has continued to invest in the popular attraction with a series of upgrades across the course.

The new mascot, affectionately known as “Golfer George”, was created by Southport based CWS Wrought Designs and took nearly 4,000 individual welds to complete.

Charles Law from Southport Crazy Golf said the sculpture is a fitting tribute to his grandfather and the legacy he created more than six decades ago.

He said: “George Law has been installed by Terry from CWS Wrought Designs, another masterpiece he has created for us demonstrating his talent working with metal.

“He has made it using nearly 4,000 welds, which would equate to more than 81 metres of welded metal if stretched out in a line. He has done a sterling job and we’re delighted with the response we’ve had from visitors.”

The sculpture weighs more than 100kg and has been galvanised to ensure it remains a permanent fixture in Kings Gardens for years to come.

Charles added: “This investment marks 61 years since my grandfather George Law established this much loved course. We’ve already had fantastic feedback and it’s great to see visitors noticing all the improvements we’ve been making.

“We have families who first played here 60 years ago and now return with their children and grandchildren. It’s become part of Southport’s heritage.”

The new mascot joins several recent additions to the 18 hole course, including refreshed obstacles such as the Space Race Rocket, Watermill and Helter Skelter.

With The Open returning to Southport in July, Charles is expecting a busy summer.

He said: “We’re very excited to welcome visitors for The Open. Crazy golf is a fun way for people to enjoy a bit of friendly competition and our course is perfect for families, children, adults and golf fans visiting the town.”

The course is open daily from 10am to 6pm, weather permitting, with 18 holes costing £5 per person. Visitors who manage to sink a putt on the famous 19th hole can even win a free round.
