New Liverpool pub burgled just days after opening

Following its official opening last week, McSwiggins, located in the historic Grade II-listed Castle Moat House, was targeted in a burglary during the early hours of Tuesday morning (21st July).

Two intruders forced entry into McSwiggins, ransacking storage areas and stealing a substantial amount of premium stock. While unable to access the upper floors, the perpetrators caused a lot of structural damage in their attempt.

In a brazen turn of events, the intruders returned for a second break-in attempt shortly after, resulting in one suspect being apprehended by a member of staff who had arrived on site. One individual remains in police custody.

The newly opened Irish bar had only been serving customers for a matter of days before the devastating incident.

Dean McClafferty, General Manager at McSwiggins, said:

“So much passion, dedication, and hard work went into restoring this fantastic listed building in the heart of Liverpool’s commercial district over the last few months.

“For it to be vandalised and damaged within a week of us opening our doors leaves a bitter taste in everyone’s mouth.

“Being a heritage, Grade II-listed building, repairs and security alterations require careful care and compliance, which makes damage like this particularly challenging.

“However, our team is working around the clock to clean up, repair the damage, and get back to serving the city.”

Due to the ongoing police investigation and initial cleanup, McSwiggins opening was briefly delayed, but the team are now welcoming customers back through the doors as normal.
