15 restaurants in South Liverpool you need to try right now

Liverpool city centre’s obviously booming for restaurants and bars, but it’s not got the exclusive on great places to eat and drink.

Get out into the suburbs and check out the amazing restaurants in South Liverpool where you’ll find a huge variety of cuisines, small and large plates, and even a couple of fine dining gems tucked away.

Mahoe Blue

This little restaurant opposite the entrance to Sefton Park has brought all the flavours and passion for sharing good food direct from Jamaica to south Liverpool. 

Owned by husband and wife chefs, it’s getting five-star reviews for dishes created from family recipes like ackee and saltfish, rice and peas, spicy okra fries, jerk chicken and a rum punch that packs a punch.

Churrasco Steak House

A traditional style steakhouse, offering everything from flat iron to ribeye, rump and the rest and you can have your steak served raw on a 350-degree lava stone to let it cook just as you like it. 

The steak stone stays hot until you get to even the last mouthful, and cooking this way keeps in more of the natural juices. As well as a stack of starters, there’s a selection of delicious sides to choose from, including Jerk-grilled corn ribs and salt and pepper veg, plus a choice of fries, salads and sauces. 

At Aigburth, there’s the Churrasco cabin for outdoor dining, with five private booths, a personal server and, when the weather’s nice, skylights to let the sunshine in. 

You can even take the dog (although there’s a good chance they’ll want a mouthful of your meal too!).

Space Bar & Grill

Space started life as a coffee shop, on the corner of Mersey Road, but now it’s so much more. It still gets a daytime crowd for drinks, breakfast and lunch but it’s got an evening menu too with speciality kebabs and burgers as well as steak night on Thursdays. 

There’s the bonus of live jazz on Friday nights and a colourful courtyard that’s a gorgeous suntrap – the perfect place for a chilled wine or glass of fizz.

Cartoccio

Street food’s a big deal in Italy, they do it brilliantly, and Cartoccio has kept up the tradition here in south Liverpool. Facing Lark Lane, it serves delicious filled pizza pockets stuffed to order and salads in the daytime then in the evening it’s antipasti and pasta. 

The desserts, no surprise, are absolutely fabulous, especially the homemade tiramisu and affogato with coffee or amaretto.

Just Wings

No real need to explain what they do … it’s wings, any which way you like! Go old school traditional, boneless, in a wrap or a burger, then all you’ve got to do is choose your sauce or dry rub and pick out a side. 

Heads up, the American salted fries are the number one, but you might want to squeeze in some onion rings too.

Christakis

Christakis Greek restaurant has long been an institution in Liverpool!

Up towards Cressington Station, it has just the same fun vibe as Duke Street did, and the same authentic menu including the sharing platters and mezze it’s well known for. 

The party theme ramps up on Fridays and Saturdays with belly dancers and a DJ.

The Elephant Pub

The Elephant Pub and Bakehouse is an institution in Woolton Village. The grade II listed pub offers fantastic food, cocktails, wine, beers and coffee – all from local suppliers! 

As a village pub, they aim to make everyone feel at home, and pride themselves on their attention to detail and great service… making every visit a special one!

One Percent Forest 

The Nordic inspired coffee shop & cocktail bar was born after owners Hannah and Dean’s trips to Iceland. They fell in love with the culture and food, and decided that’s what we were missing in Liverpool, and it’s a good job they did. 

The food is made fresh daily and its style and flavours lend itself to those typical of what you would find in Reykjavik. They’re dog friendly as well which is a bonus!

The Pickled Olive

The Pickled Olive is a charming cocktail and wine bar nestled in the heart of the villagel. 

Renowned for its inviting atmosphere and delicious cheese and charcuterie boards, as well as top-tier bevvies. This has also become a local favourite. 

Boasting a warm and welcoming atmosphere, it’s an ideal spot for a relaxed meal with friends, a cozy date night, or a family gathering.

Botanico

Open everyday, Botanico will have something for everyone including a delicious Breakfast and Brunch menu, all day wood-fired pizza and an evening Bistro offering.

Botanico’s menu caters for all dietary requirements with a selection of vegan dishes available… they even have Afternoon Tea available everyday, the tiramisu macaron is unbelievable!

Minna

At Minna they care about traceability and locally sourced, organic produce. They’re massive on sustainability – inspired by their great nan Minna who turned a plot of land behind her council house into an allotment, and encouraged neighbours to grow their own veggies.

Their Cumberland curl muffin is a showstopper and a favourite with locals and regulars.

Press Bros.

Started up by brothers Oliver and Tito, PRESS BROS. found its fame in the city within the Baltic Market. Serving up amazing coffee, as well as them boss kinder espresso martini’s. Now having opened their own stand alone premises, they have taken The Lane by storm. 

Dishing out their great drinks and even better food. Just like their Sausage Patty Melt! A homemade sausage patty, melted American cheese, fried egg and a hash brown on a toasted English muffin, with a choice of red or brown sauce! Heavy. 

They have now added a permanent veggie & vegan version of this to the menu too!

Elif

An institution on Lark Lane. This Turkish grill has been serving up their perfectly cooked meats and sides for over 16-years! It is easy to understand why this place has stood the test of time once you have the food! Whether it is their massive mixed-grills, their special kebabs, or even one of their many mezes – there’s something to suit everyones taste buds.

Hafla Hafla

After years of cooking Middle Eastern-inspired food at home, owner Tim decided to give it a go on the street food circuits. Hafla Hafla means “party party” in Arabic, and he wanted his food to be all about fun. Get on this though… Their Beef Brisket! It’s slow roasted with pomegranate bbq sauce, on a bed of Hafla’s famous homemade hummus. Fireworks going off in your mouth for this one!

Polidor 68

A beautiful French inspired bistro, cocktail and wine bar. Owner Rosie wanted somewhere in Liverpool just like the Parisian bistros that she loves so much. 

Their delicious dishes make for a great light lunch or get some small plates and share them! Beautiful plates such as their stunning king prawns – sautéed garlic & chilli king prawns with ‘nduja, samphire and toasted sourdough. Definitely one to visit!
