8 Festive Family games to play on Christmas Day

Christmas day is all about four things; food, fun, family…… and falling out over who’s been cheating at Monopoly!

The big day is almost upon us and we got talking at The Guide Liverpool HQ about what daft games we all play on Christmas Day. Some stick with tradition and set up the Monopoly board late evening, some stich up the grandparents playing the likes of Pie Face, some go old school with a raucous game of Hungry Hippos and some go back to pen and paper and cause untold drama simply playing boy girl!

Let’s face it, whatever gets your slightly tipsy, competitive spirit going, we love a bit of family participation and this year we’re lining up 9 brand new, family friendly game ideas to try out this Christmas day. Will you be crowned the winner?

Here’s 8 festival family games to play on Christmas Day…..

1 – I went to Lapland and I took….

Introducing the festive edition of ‘I went to the Asda and I bought…’ One person starts by naming one item, for example, ‘I went to Lapland and I took a reindeer’. The next person adds an item whilst trying to remember what the previous person said. A good one to get the whole family involved in and help pass the time while the turkey cooks! (Gets funnier with alcohol).

2 – Who Am I?

Everyone loves the famous post it note game where each player writes the name of a well-known person onto a sticky note and puts it on another player’s forehead as they ask questions, trying to guess who they are. This is perfect to play with a large group and brings out lots of laughs for those who haven’t got a clue! We reckon Donald Trump will feature heavily this year.

3 – Pin the red nose on the reindeer

Transform a corkboard into a cute reindeer face with some paper eyes and antlers, blindfold the younger family members and watch as they go mad sticking the pin into your living room walls! We suggest performing a risk assessment and moving any furniture out of the way if playing this game after a few drinks!

4 – Heads Up!

Heads Up! is available to download from app stores and is a fantastic go-to game for any occasion, plus, you don’t need anything other than your phone and a few friends or family members to play. The game, which originated from Ellen DeGeneres, has become a worldwide success. Players must guess the word on the card on the other person’s head before the timer runs out! The tight time limit can result in players getting flustered and doing some pretty crazy things!

5 – Festive Boy/Girl

You’re not Scouse if you’ve never played Boy/Girl and at Christmastime we like to mix it up with random categories to challenge all the family. Perfect for when you’re all at the table, grab a piece of paper each and a pen, draw up some columns and go mad with categories such as boy, girl, scouse phrases, naughtiest thing you’ve done, celeb you most hate and swear word, and as one person recites the alphabet, another says stop, whatever letter is chosen is the theme for the next round. A – Andrew, Andrea, ahhh hey, Amanda Holden….etc. Ps – We love Amanda really.

6 – Twister

Prepare to look back on your Instagram story and laugh your ass off as your extended family fall about the living room trying to get a right hand on red and left foot on green. Its an oldie, but a goodie.

7 – Cards Against Humanity

Billed as ‘A party game for horrible people’, Cards Against Humanity will make you cringe, laugh, fall out and feel utterly awful about yourself. It’s hilarious and once you start you can’t stop.

8 – What do you Meme?

We should say from the off is that is not a game for kids! The rules of this brilliant 2017 game are simple. Create the funniest meme by pairing Caption Cards with the Photo Card and be a winner. A nominated judge picks the best combination, so you can play until you’re hungry, at which point stop playing and make a turkey butty!
